I'm assuming you don't have a hydraulic press? Clearly you have the fab skills and creativity. Why not slap together some sort of framework from scrap steel? Even a simple setup with a 12 ton bottle jack would likely get the job done, and be useful for other projects.

Typically, I chicken out and just cut a slice out of the wall of an appropriately sized piece of pipe when I've got a filler piece like that to fabricate. Another reason for me to consider a CNC plasma table with some sort of tube cutting attachment.

He has a press but just likes to hit things instead.
I'll let Jack explain the details but from the last time I saw the rig, the plate he was going to use was already a huge piece of round 1/4" thick tubing. So I'm assuming he cutout a section he wanted and used his little jig setup to contour the plate more to his liking.
