Wow what a wild trip this weekend. The wildest sight of the weekend was a toss up between the J&M rig with The bikini topped woman in daisy dukes riding in the back standing and holding on to the roll bar. The second sight of the weekend was the guy rolling down winch hill 3 with nelly the dog flying out and landing on the ground unscathed very scary moment. It makes me re consider bring my dog along for the ride. I am going to start looking into some kind of harness to hold my buddy in tight.

from the looks of last weekend Its well on its way there... almost watched a girl get run over in a white 4runner this weekend as she was trying to jump into the back of it to be the 4th girl without a seat belt on in it. the guy that rolled sat had no belt on and was lucky to not be hurt (have video). saw more irresponsible drunks this weekend than i ever have anywhere else. some guy was all lit at committee and rolled twice after driving around all throttle happy with no regard to other people in the area. its quickly becoming the new sluice box and we all know how many people have been air lifted out of there. there is a HUGE change in trail condition from the time you hit committee to wh3. seems that that section of the trail is just a place to be away from the law and party... sunday night there were only two small groups of people on the trail side of committee but at about 11:30 we all were woken up to blasting music, gunshots all night, and some sort of revving competition from the bypass side of the river until they brought the party over to our side till about 3am. not to mention the MASSIVE amount of white flowers that are pretty much solely from committee to wh3. i mean everywhere. its sad. 5-10 years ago people liked to go wheeling to be out in the mountains and have fun. seems to be that its more and more about a party scene. and just out of curiousity. last thing i heard the old road out committee was closed and the new trail was the one and only way out of committee... that seems to have been bypassed and the old road is now in use again..

To address the Committe trail question, yes we need to replace the blockade of the old trail yet again. We haven't had time or manpower to make it permanent. Wish people could understand PG&E could pull access for all from the use of their private property that accesses the Committee crossing but what are you gonna do huh? Just need to hang in there and keep doing the work.

As far as the other concerns again we have to hang in there, do the work and educate. Some will not be reached but hopefully we can make a difference and keep the trail open. Part of the problem is probably those trying to escape from the law enforcement over at the Con but they'll just bring it down on us eventually.

glad i missed the party. i can't stand the drunk motor revving idiots. thats why i avoid the holiday weekends. looks like we could be fast bringing the political cloud of the rubicon over here. i hope the water stays high just to keep most of the tards out. thats what gatekeeper helped out on the con and look at that now. time to block the commitee road for what the 4th time. its should be obvious to anybody that gives a damn that the road has been blocked. the bypass isn't that hard, build a rig that doesn't suck.

if you wanna hate on me for saying i don't the like the "party time" on the trail then your probably one of the idiots id rather avoid anyways.

blockade was in somewhat decent shape aug 10th, upon returning on aug 23rd blockade was obviously disregarded.

i think some BIG and several signs saying and explaining why its closed(and arrows pointing to the new trail) would be a great thing, others in my group that were not aware of the closure or the issue thought the logs were just old downed timber from the winter snow.

x2 since I was one of the two rigs down by wagon wheel and we didn't make a fawking peep or shoot any fawking guns off, I could be a dick and drop names and rigs of all the offenders, but I won't :shaking: so let's not pile us all into one category on the trail because I too had to hear folks roll in at god knows what time loud as shit wile I slept on my cot under a tree. I know after we got the third replaced in my buddies rig and we left I dumped several gallons of water on my fire "dead out" and picked up a almost a garbage bags full of crap off the trail over the weekend between wh3 and committee.

There was plenty of logs blocking the old route, just not to the right. I think simply dragging some more logs over across that path as well and maybe a Fordyce sign with an arrow pointing over to the reroute would suffice. When I say logs I mean 8 or so and not just something folks can drive over. I would like to help out with that, seems like a quick and easy fix. I know my buddy hadn't been down that way since the blockade was put in and he was a bit confused on which path to take having not ever been the new route.

I don't think that Toyotaboy is saying that everyone there was being a dick. We met and talked with some very cool people on the trail. I believe he was trying to bring up the fact that we all need to be a little bit more respectful to the trail and to other users. The fact is that there is a ton of TP being left above ground, and there was quite a bit of gunfire at night. People wheeling at night does not bother me so much, but we do need to stay on the trail. We watched Nate roll, he seems like a nice guy. The scary fact was that he did not have his seatbelt on. He came out ok, but I think we can all agree that it could have gone badly for him. I know everyone is out there to have fun, but when guns start going off in a crowded area at night it starts to get a little scary. I don't want to start a debate about shooting on the trail, but I hope we can agree that shooting at night in a campground is a bad idea. I do admit there was a certain point that I started to hope that the engines in the reving competition would give up, but I did expect that kind of noise on a holiday.

I see what you are saying. Believe me the person shooting got a talking to by a couple of big pissed off dudes :D but we were tactful and explained that he cannot do that type of thing out there, he was very apologetic and said it would not happen again. He felt bad because our dogs were scared shitless and ran off in the dark and we had to hunt them down. He felt really bad and he knew better, he even passed back through and apologized again.

I agree a little more education is needed out there and I always try to lead by example like stopping in the middle of the trail with other rigs not in my group behind me and pickup any trash I see on the ground. I hope that kind of behavior is seen and then followed by said person.

the good thing about us wheelers is most of the time even if something really bad happens we can get ourselves out of it and there is usually plenty of folks willing to help out. thats what its all about. i've done stupid stuff before and learned from it. i've been helped plenty and i regularly help out others.

even on the really busy and holiday weekends i'm complaining about the majority of people seem good and i always meet and talk to a lot of cool people. yes there are always derelicts, dicks and all around immature dudes as well but i think we can police ourselves. lets not be afraid to point out stuff thats really bad when we see it without trying to fight eachother.

all i hope is that we can keep the uniqueness and remote feel of fordyce. and not let it become rubicon where it seems there is some kind of competition on who can tread the lightest.

Not only did that driver tear up the trail when he did not need to he risked breaking hard and pluging the trail while he tried to climb that in 2wd. on the subject of being able to police ourselves, I talked with a forsest service ranger a few weeks back and he told me that they have a Jeep Rubicon they are trying to get ready for the trail. He didn't say when they would start patroling, but it's coming.

That Jeep's been in the works for a while now. The FOF talked to them last year about helping with the build. As of now I think they have the Jeep and are in the process of getting tires and a lift kit which their mechanics are suppose to install. After that we'll help them out.

However, I am not sure about their plans for using it as a regular patrol vehicle. While I would like to see them out there, there is the matter of the driver learning how to rock crawl and the fact that with only one vehicle there is the question of how they could really access the trail safely.

The ranger I talked to didn't seem very excited about it, to be honest. He didn't seem like he had any intrest in learning how to wheel, combind that with running solo on the trail, and things could go bad for them quickly. He did say that he has tried to patrol the fordyce on his motorcycle but the water levels won't allow him to cross. So I guess that's where the Jeep comes into play.

I hear what you say shambles. I agree that in the proper situation a person is well entitled to thrash their junk. However by watching the video you have no idea if the person has the ability to recover or people with them with the ability to recover. In addition, no matter what the story there is simply no reason to spin tires in the dirt, willfully, in an area already losing what little soil exists due to vehicle traffic, when there is an option. The trail can not afford that persons decision. The person is well entitled to say, yup, try and make it in 2wd, nobody behind, winches and people to help if it goes bad, hammer down. The right decision is to they say, yup , it will require much tire spin and
Erosion acceleration , and the potential for resource damage far outways my need to climb something in 2wd.

What did he do to the rest of the trail to get out. Still spin tires in the ruff parts or did he use his winch. Probably did not use his winch. More excessive damage to the trail.

Actually it turned out to be a minor problem with the hub and we fixed it right after he got over the top. No "more excessive damage to the trail from him" :shaking:

glad i missed the party. i can't stand the drunk motor revving idiots. thats why i avoid the holiday weekends. looks like we could be fast bringing the political cloud of the rubicon over here. i hope the water stays high just to keep most of the tards out. thats what gatekeeper helped out on the con and look at that now. time to block the commitee road for what the 4th time. its should be obvious to anybody that gives a damn that the road has been blocked. the bypass isn't that hard, build a rig that doesn't suck.

if you wanna hate on me for saying i don't the like the "party time" on the trail then your probably one of the idiots id rather avoid anyways.

As long as people aren't breaking the rules, how about you show some tolerance.

Everyone likes to do different things when out on the trail, and as long as they aren't damaging the vegetation, shooting firearms, leaving trash, smoldering fires, etc. Let them do their thing. Within reason of course.

I love to night wheel, much much much better then wheeling during the day. I also love to listen to my music rather loud when i wheel. But as soon as i see a camp i turn down my music and and try and be nice. Some times you can't see the tents...

I've been up to the rubicon 9 times this year, and i have yet to see some of the stupid/loud/belligerent/no respect people you seem to think the rubicon is filled with.

Also the people that i DO see who are loud at night with there music/motors, have VERY capable rigs. But even then they roll through where I've been camped and 10 minutes later i'm back asleep.

So my point is, don't act like such a grumpy/crotchety/intolerant person. Take a few deep breath and realize that people enjoy things differently.

I'm sure you've been on the trail and got in the way/annoyed/bothered others on the trail.

We ALL have things that bug/annoy us on the trails, its because we are all human, and have opinions...

So show a little tolerance for people who are enjoying the trail differently then you, and aren't breaking any rules.

I think most of the folks are in agreement in this thread, with the exception of that highlighted part. Different folks define that differently, and that's where opinions differ.

BTW, thanks for turning down your music at night near camps. That's as cool and considerate as the folks NOT turning up the jams first thing in the AM when I'm sleeping in.

 Well said!
If everyone flexes a little bit and communications stay up, that's a great start at working together to keep this trail open.

Randii (who also loves to night 'wheel, though it has been a while)

I took the family and a friend who has never been across the trail up this past weekend. We had a very good trip with a couple minor mechanical issues but nothing that slowed us down.
When we got to the first winch hill we incountered a gruop of asshats that had to have their stereo going full blast. which is not a big deal to me until the music turned to the shit that no 2 and 5 year olds should be listening to. So after I went up the hill I got the kids out off the jeep and was going to spot for my buddy but instead of me starting a pissing match with a group that said (we have been here since Wednesday and came to party) I put the kids back in the jeep and had my buddy do the bypass so he did not have to deal with the drunk asshats heckling him.
We then went on the the 4th crossing to camp and found no open camp sites so we back tracked a little and found a nice site. Just before dark a few gun shots went off up a the crossing and we were not to concerned about that. then the races started. At least 2 different buggies were doing hot laps up at the crossing and I know for certain that they were not staying on the trail.
Then on sunday we went up the committee trail only to find that very few people have been using the new trail. All of the logs blocking the old trail have been removed. My family and I moved as many of the logs back into place on the top side of the trail as we could.
So the goal of this story is to remind every one that fordyce is still a family friendly trail and we all need to respect it and the people that use it.

exactly why i dont go on wheelin trips during the weekend or on holidays, i go out in the middle of no where to get away from it all, not bring it all out there. went out there 3 days before trek and the trail looked great, almost zero trash and the committee route was still mostly blocked. came back a week after trek and there was quite a bit of trash, TONS of white flowers, and the committee route blockade was gone.

crowds and large gatherings, even with good intentions, usually results in a few negative things occurring.
