Hi I just finish my axle swap on my 85 toyota to a unimog 404 axle but the promlem is that the crawl box are making a lot of noise like wherling sound or like gears without oil , it happens only when i put in to two wheel drive and when I drive on the highway at 20mph and obove , but if I disconnect the rear driveshaft and use only front wheel drive in high four the noise will go away. any one experience this problem any suggistion...

In my Swiss truck, so much engine noise gets into the cab that the axle would have to make a lot of whine to be heard. My guess is that unloaded portal gears are the noise you hear. Someone smarter than me will know the right answer.:homer:

Same here, as soon as I shift back to rwd it makes racket. I always thought it was the ring and pinion. Since Im in fwd most of the time Im not gonna make a special trip in that heavy ass third if its not bothering anything (no filings found in fluid).

What happens when you remove the front drive shaft?

What happens when you remove them both and run the transmission up to speed? (Apart from not moving)

404 portals should be fairly quiet. A small amount of extra whirring is ok, but anything more and you have an issue. How big of an issue, I can't say, as my portals have been pretty quiet, even with a cracked portal case and even rusty bearings.

I dont think its my portal axle are making that noise because I bought that Axle Brand New from Swiss Army .I did remove the front and rear driveshaft and shift it into gear and the noise still there, I found out its the dual tranfer case are making that whirlling noise at speed above 15mph whenever you let up the gas pedal.
