Just curious.
I have been away from the 4x4 scene for a while now and I gotta say that roll cages sure have gone extreme lately.:D

I have always padded the drivers and pass area with armorcell foam and permacel tape.

Speaking from experience with rolling at high speed on pavement I'll take mine padded.:emb4:

LOL am I a puss or what.:D

Most comps require padding.

Something I've always wondered (since I'm gonna do this one of these days) - how do you pad them when you put aluminum plate across the top?

Shooting video. You can get some killer footage with a rollbar cam:D Just aim it so you can see a little of the hood for perspective, it turns out super steady.

I use padding anywhere near my head. I've banged my head on
unpadded bars enough and it's not fun.:(

I know its not a actual truck but, the Mini Baja (sorta looks like a mini comp buggy for those of you that dont know) that i drive every once in a while when our club gets it running is basically one big roll cage,
well last time out some how it ended up on the roof and all i can remeber is i wish we had padding, the next day and following week all i had was bruses so i think roll cage padding is definitely a must, or else the roll cage isnt much protection if you are knocked out when it stops rolling.

And BTW all of you had some sick rigs, they're lookin really good.

Yes. But it might not seem like it cause there is more tube and WAY less tape

LOL Normally I would agree but here in Washington I see a LOT of mud so the tape is way easy to keep clean.

I have givin up on the foam by the door bars and the lower part of the forward hoop since it wasn't gonna hold up to my clod hoppers.:D

You guys don't wear helmets or seatbelts. I've rolled ours before and with the five point your not going anywhere near the cage and with the helmet you can't even feel when your head does hit.

We wear helmets, i forgot to mention that the bruses were on my legs where the cage hits my knee, and my shins where the bar for the steeering is in the way during a roll over. Also forgot to ask, are you saying the five point harness didnt leave some brusing when you rolled, then again we were "testing" so it was a little more extreme then competition.

Yes it's amazing what your body will do when you roll at highway speeds on the street.

I used to race circle track, and padding was manditory anywhere ones body could come into contact with the cage. Which I think is a good idea, look at it this way, you roll, or even flop hard on the weekend and lets say you whack your elbow on the cage just hard enough, added to the fact that you just fawked up the rest of the weekend, you could be outa work for a week or more. I work flat rate as an auto mechanic, and even being slowed down will hurt my paycheck.
Call me a puss, but I'll take mine padded please.

Is roll cage padding is so the rocks don't get hurt when you roll:)

i heard that padding your cage will cause it to rust real bad, is that true?

It probably does if they are out in the weather and stay wet all the time.

We have to use padding to protect the driver and spotter at EROCC.

It won't rust if you rap the padding up in permacel tape. Waterproof. I ran my last cage for 10 years in the rain and mud and when I removed that cage there was no rust anywhere.

If you put your foam on with tyraps or just strips of tape it will let a lot of water in to soak on the tubing. Just my .02 cents form a northwesterner.

When you use this stuff, do you use two pieces per 3 foot section ( ) to go around the tube? How do you fix the stuff in place so it doesn't spin around the tube?

Cracked my head open on a roll and I have padding now.....

Best price I could find

I would think tape would take away from the effictiveness of the padding. I just used Huge zip ties.

Hopefully you'll only be able to hit you head on one side of the tube...
This is the shit btw, it absorbs heaps of energy and gets denser the more it's compressed.

I used the Kirkey padding from Summit 3' for $3, free shipping.

I run a rocktop also, just trimmed down the edges to fit, then secured it with zip ties where I could and used double sided velcro tape where I couldn't use the ties. The velcro tape will not stand up to 70 mph on a trailer, b/t/w.(as I seem to keep forgetting :emb2: ) I used 1.5" dense foam pipe insulation in non critical areas where I was only protecting arms, legs, etc. Don't use it for anything close to your melon. It sucks, but I can't find any kind of race padding for 1.5" diameter tube.

edit: Bronkzilla beat me to it...:flipoff2:

I first used that glue on half round high density padding, but found it to be so hard (made for helmet use) I do have helmets but tend only to get them out when fully going for it. So I sent that back and bought some of the foam (RCI) and cut and glued it in place.

i use it all around both the drivers and passengers head. i really like the way bare tube looks better but i'd much rather have the padding to protect my grape. you can kinda tell where it is in this pic.

Of course it measures 1.75" just like everything else.

Wish I had gone with the Armacell.

on my last cage I built in my rig I had to use padding.
but have recently cut the roof off and redone the cage bigger so you cant hit your noggin and I am not using any padding.

I should have put padding on the steering wheel because last weekend I was gettin it real good and hit a wall needles to say the whole in my lip from my teeth goin through should heal up by next week.

Compare the cost of some padding and tape with the cost of an extended hospital stay due to a head injury and the answer is clear.... put in some quality padding and be happy :flipoff2:
