: Series Guys! VIN question

Hey guys,

I 'cough' 'cough' accidentally ground off the VIN on my Series 2A 109 frame that is the basis for the D110 project and need some info about the specifications of the stamped numbers. Where exactly are they (I forgot of course)? And please give some detail here. What exact size are the numbers? What font are they in? And does anyone know if there is a source for the metal stamps to make the correct VIN?

Mike S. had mentioned Coop might have them, but I haven't phoned him yet (don't have time for one of those long conversations that tend to happen when you call Coop, or Bill Davis, or George Laird, or Chris Laws).

Thanks for the info,

Billster

btw. I also 'ahem' destroyed the VIN plate and will order one from British Pacific, then use 1/8" steel stamps to put on the VIN number.

They are on the RH spring hanger on the outside face (they are actually on the spring hanger which probably is not there) Anyway can you see where you ground it off? :flipoff2: :flipoff2: Numbers are about 1/4" inch tall sans-serif. Hell if the component it was originally stamped on is gone, what difference does it make what font the stamps you use is? I think someone would say "Hey this frame doesnt even look like series frame" long before they said "hey the kerning on this VIN is all wrong":flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Thanks,

Is that the front or rear spring hanger?

You tell me! . . .

Its the front, there is no rear hanger per se its more of a hole in the frame that the top shackle bolt passes through.

just use any type of stamp and say that you replaced part of the chassis rail and it came without a number stamped in it.

remember though...there is also a number stamped INSIDE the rear LH chassis rail, about 6" to a foot inside from the rear crossmember.
you'll need a fibre optic camera to see it, as the number is stamped BEFORE they weld the 2 halves together.

i know this... a friend was lynched by the law for 'ringing' vehicles (ringing= stealing cars then re-stamping legitimate chassis numbers in the stolen chassis). 'we' found out the hard way that there are numbers stamped inside the chassis.

So how did the law find the "hidden" stamped number? Did they cut the frame in half?

i think they also use a type of x-ray thing (same as they use for testing structural damage in aircraft wings and welds) to 'look' through the steelwork, and it shows the number up as 'damaged' material (where the numbers have been 'stamped')

sooo.... if you were trying to 'hide' the front number on the chassis rail (and the rear on...IF you knew where it was precisely) you're better off to actually remove the metal TOTALLY that has the number stamped into it. my mate had just run an angle grinder over over the old number and welded over that (then ground it back flush with the rest of the chassis) but the number still showed up! so DRILL plenty of holes through the number, or just run the angle blade stright through the steel and make a big 'slit' and weld it up. won;t affect structural strength, the area where the numbers are stamped (on series and 90/110) is double thickness anyway.

of course, i've only 'heard' all this information..never tried it myself...orificer....:D
