I have a 72 FJ-40...brakes work, but you have to pump them to get them going, even then they don't seem to work well.

I have not tried to bleed them yet, but i was told that was not the problem.

Do you think I need to get a new seal kit, or just order a new MC?

Would it be better/cheaper to do a mini truck power brake conversion?

Please help. Thanks.

I am looking to sell the rig, so I want to make sure it is done right the first time.

'72... all drum brakes, correct?

Most likely is the adjustment. You have eight adjusters to mess with, just takes a little time to adjust them.

I'd pull off all the drums to check for leaks, make sure you have good brake linings, and everthng is in good condition.

If you have open diff's, it is easier to adjust the brakes by jacking up one wheel at a time and spinning the tires.

Ya, if you're selling... just see if you can get them adjusted. If they are all leaking, and in bad shape, then find a fellow cruiser head who will buy it and convert it to disc brakes! :D

Here's what I'd do, don't spend another dime on those drum brakes. Do the mini truck conversion up front and the GM rear discs. The old double pump syndrome, feels like air in the system but 99% of the time caused by out of adjusted wheel cylinders. This is caused by the brake pads wearing and the "dual" cylinders not being self adjusting therefore needing to be re-adjusted about every 5K or so.
