The wife and I (and kids, a 4yo and 10yo) are kinda spontaneous and are going to move to Maui sight unseen. I just want to know the pros and cons of living there, what areas not to live in and basically just what to expect. I can answer questions cause I know there's probably more info needed...
Thanks in advance!
motojunkie 09-29-2011, 10:38 AM Unless you are independently wealthy or have a well paying job in advance of moving, I would recommend against it. The cost of living is exceptionally high out here.

You just don't want my haole ass on your island!!! :D
J/K man, I am going to keep my options open and I will call a few contractors for work.
We talked about moving to Oahu a few years ago. The first sprinkler contractor I called said "I'll hire you today cause my employees don't want to 40 hrs a week and if surfs up, they bail off site!" Shit kinda fell through then, but now we are pretty much prepared to GTFO.
Thank you for your response.
solidmaui78 09-29-2011, 06:22 PM Its a great place to live. Im from West Maui and its a nice side of the island, all the towns are nice, some more local than others. Some are cooler some hotter rainy/drier weather. If you have more ?s let me know.
Aloha
solidmaui78 09-29-2011, 06:28 PM Check out Advance Fire Protection or Dorvin Leis(union) / construction is kinda slow on island right now, but theres jobs out there. you bringing a crawler?

motojunkie 09-29-2011, 06:53 PM I apologize if I came off as a dick, I just wouldn't want you to show up here and be surprised by $5/gal for milk.
Maui is a good place to live though. The only con I can think of is the cost of living...hence why I brought it up. haha. Oh and tourists driving like idiots. I swear they forget how to drive when they come here...this ain't LA!

Thanks for the leeds. Not too sure if I'd bring the XJ. I haven't looked at shipping costs yet.
I apologize if I came off as a dick
You didn't. Thanks for the response!
MendoXJ 09-30-2011, 12:11 AM Its a great place to live and is very kid friendly. Yes its expensive as hell but thats the cost you pay to live in Paradise. I just moved here 2 weeks ago but my fam is from oahu so ive spent alot of time there and Kauai. Maui is a good mix of stuff to do and not super busy like oahu.
For such a small island it has almost all the different climates just a drive away. You can be in the rain forest and then be in a desert within 30 minutes. Keeps things interesting. Its very hot and dry near the coast but if you like cooler weather move up country maui and enjoy the nice climate and chill people and still only be 20 minutes to the beach or work.
It costs about $1100 to ship a car or crawler over with matson or horizon. Im still in process of getting my crawler over here. In the mean time I bought a BMW convertible that is keeping me occupied :D

hipresa 09-30-2011, 05:49 PM Born and raised. Myself, Wife and 7 year son son lives in Kula, Maui (Upcountry). If you like cool climates and about a 30 minutes drive to town or beach...then Kula is the place to be. Costly to purchase a home hear, but you can rent! Bring your crawler with you! PASHA Hawaii can get it hear for about $1000(+-). call it a farm vehicle and it about $800 (+-), besides you can come with us and crawl...Island Crawler Union! Drop us a line if you do decide to move. Always looking for more crawler OHANA!:smokin: Good luck and Aloha.
hooper808 11-30-2011, 11:55 PM Maui is pretty awesome, if you can afford it. Fuel prices will definitely kick you in the balls, and generally anything you dont grow or make yourself is double what mainland prices are... other than that, lots to do and see of you know where to go. Definitely bring a well built crawler...lol:D
