well i figured its time to get a reliable SUV for daily/winter time here in ohio. and ive settled on a montero. they seem to have the best price, ive looked at toyotas but they are quite expensive. and i really just dont like the look of nissans... and jeep...to plain. reliable but yeah,...
basically just getting it fro street use maybe a little rough dirt road usage to go camping nothing major. How can i identify the winter package so i can get the LSD or locker rear end?
and is there anything besides a good maintenece record to look for when buying one? and check for bad valve guide seals... other than that they seem pretty stout even with high mileage.
Thanks for any advice or help.

There is a button on the dash for the airlocker

Keep changing the timing belt every 60k and don't overheat it.

tough choice...you can get a 95 SR which has a 3.5 and a stock rear air locker.
the gen 1's have no locker and a 3.0....but you can transplant all the stuff from a 95 into the gen 1.

now what if i was looking at like a 2000 or like a 2001?
i found a few close or those years for pretty cheap just hitting the 100k mark or under 150k all fair priced and in good shape?

I recently decided to let go of my 1998 Mitsu Montero 3.5L w/factory locker + 2" lifted custom bilstein suspension. Also has Jaos bull bar in front. LMK if interested.

Where in Ohio are you? I'm in Cleveland. Email me via my profile if you want. I don't get on this board too often. Or others these days, too much going on.
The winter package usually came in the Gen II.5s. They rean from 98-00. IF you are looking at and 01 Montero (not Sport), then it is a Gen III. If you go Gen III, you want 03 on with the 3.8L. The Gen IIs had the best gear ratios in the axles.
I've been watching Craigspal for a few weeks now. Not too much inventory in northern o
Ohio. If you want to pay for shipping, there was a Gen II.5with ~60k in CA.
