After 15 years of wheeling, I bought my first Jeep, a 99 TJ, 2.5 manual trans. Saw in the owner's manual that the 6 cyl fuel tank is considerably larger. Anyone know if this would be a straight swap (yeah, I searched)? Thanks.

There are two sizes of tanks in TJs - 15 gallon and 19 gallon. They are interchangeable - in fact, many people believe they are one in the same, but with different sending units and/or fill tubes.

Anyway, it's an easy swap if you want to do it. But first search for TJ Gas Tank Fix and see what you get.

Well, as mentioned before, they may be interchangeable, and they may be identical (with the exception of the sending unit and filler tube). YJ's did use the same tank with a mod to the filler tube (longer tube on smaller gas tanks causing them not to make use of the full tank).

I know for a fact that my early 97 (Oct 96 build) had a 15 gal tank that was physically 1-2" different from the 29 gal (I got a 98 with the 19 gal tank and swapped the hitch, hitch was flush with the bottom of the 15 gal tank and 1-2 inches above the bottom of the 19 gal tank).

Several other people have tried the YJ fix (cut the filler tube off shorter in the tank) on TJ's and found that it works. This seems to indicate that at some point DC decided to go back to ty YJ approach.

FYI - on my 97 4 cyclinder I took the top off the tank, reached in and cut off the "vent" tube. Not the fill tube. The original vent tube extends in and down into the tank several inches and creates alot of air space in the top of the tank. By making this fix I went from about 13 gallons at fill up time to around 16 or so. I think my total capacity must be just over 18 gallons now. Do a search. There are several articles on various sites.
