Hey Guys,

I have a CUCV M1009. Weighs in about 7,500 lbs. 6bt with a 47rh trans, 37" Baja T/As now, and 42"s later. Lots of expedition, but some difficult rock crawl, and fast-desert mixed in.

Anyway, I have a 242amg from a 90 HMMWV laying around, and can not get an answer in the chevy forum of how strong these things really are. Chevy guys tell me to go with a 205.

What do you guys think? Obviously the 242amg came in the HMMWVs for a reason, but I wanted pros/cons.

Thanks,

Dave

The AMG242 is pretty stout, rarely ever had a issue with them in 10 years I spent as a mechanic in the military. There still used in M1113's which weigh almost 12,000lbs.It is a full time 4wd t-case with hi lock and low lock, low is 2.72:1.The 205 is very stout but has a higher low range gear of 1.96:1.It's a gear to gear t-case so no chain to worry about unlike the 242.

Thanks for your insight on the 242AMG. Lower gearing may be nice, will run #s, and as I will have 43"s for trails and 37"s for DD, I have to take that into account. Strength and reliability rate high on this build, as breaking in the middle of nowhere is fun to talk about later, but not then.

Mucho appreciation.

The 242 AMG is pretty strong, many folks don't realize it's a beefier version than the ones on the Jeep, it has larger shaft diameter, larger gears and a thicker/larger chain as well.

Are you planning on hooking up a cooler? The HMMWV/H1 models are cooled by ATF or Engine Coolant depending on model year and configuration [Engine Coolant on the newer 2006 H1 Alpha and a few uparmored HMMWV"s that have the cooling on the differentials as well].

The biggest problems I have had with them is the chain stretching but that is under 14K+ pound 1152 Gun Trucks. Also the speedometer drive can occasionally be a pain in the ass...
