My AX15 is crapping out on me and I need to find a new transmission. So I'm thinking about swapping in an auto. I've got it down to two trannies, the AW4 and the TF999. I can't decide which I should go with. I've been searching on here and other places and get mixed opinions. Just looking for some constructive advice. Which to choose and why? I know the 999 is shorter and the AW4 is about an inch longer. 4speed OD v. 3 speed. blahblah blah. Give me some advice.

I have the TF999, it sucks with low gears and no OD.
my vote is for the AW4.

I like my TF999 in my yj. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably go with it, just because it was an easy swap, when I pulled my puegot out. Ideally though, I like a 700R4 or an AW4. :)

I have used/driven both. I think they have there ups and downs..
-I like the 999. Its strong simple and only a deep tranny pan away from being a good off-road tranny. I also like the fact that you can select D-2-1. I really like lower gears in autos, a new TJ with 3.73s will spin 3300 on the interstate and still get 17mpg with no overdrive. I do hate spinning the motor that fast though, but i don't have a ton of intersate driving to do...mostly 65 max.
-The AW4 is a really good tranny too. I HATE the gear selector first off....the 2/1 postion sucks! The overdrive rocks on the interstate...I think 20mpg isn't too out of the question. It is longer, but only 1" longer. I think with a SYE you would be fine with up to about 4" of lift.
-The 999 is a bolt in.....the AW4 is a bit more work, and a lot more money.
I don't know what way I would go. What about running one of the new TJ 4spd autos? I am sure one will turn up in a junkyard soon. I really liked those autos when I test drove them....They drive just like the 999.....but with a pushbutton overdrive.

I'm have the same delima! I've been considering the 999 with 4.10's and 35's with the stock 4.0. What do you guys think?

I put a TF999 out of a 2k TJ in my 95 YJ. I added a shift kit, and deep pan. I havent set up a toggle switch for the lock-up Torque converter yet but love this set-up. I'm running 4.88 gears and 36" tires. I have a 4:1 kit in the T-Case and it frigen crawls over everything.
Good-luck

When the 32RH (TF999) in my TJ went out I decided to replace it with a AW4. Still in the process of doing the swap so I can't tell you how it drives.
Here's a write up on doing a AW4 swap: http://members.cox.net/aw4swap
Boils down to what you want, I needed a overdrive for the highway, otherwise I would have rebuilt my 32RH 3 speed.
Peace,
