Here's the problem. After a wheeling trip a couple weeks ago I noticed I would get some intermittent "sputtering" almost like the distributor has water in it. There’s a loss of power and the whole engine shakes the Jeep pretty good although I can keep driving and maintain speed, just not accelerate or it shakes more. We went though some fairly deep water but not deep enough to get inside (I had the doors off) It doesn't do this all the time just every so often. If I turn off the engine and let it sit for a while everything is ok again.
Here are the specs...
4.2l with a weber carburetor
Headers (so I have no o2 sensor)
All the unnecessary smog crap and vacuum lines are gone and it's been running fine up until this point. Any suggestions? TIA.

Check for vacuum leaks. Mine had many problems untill I threw away the Carter and bolted on a Motorcraft 2100. The 258's are notorious for vacume issues. Also check your timing.
Good Luck

I think you are right about the ignition part. Don't know the year of your CJ, but it could be an ignition box (gold box) problem. At any rate it is ignition related.

It does seem like my timming is off. I'll try and borrow a timming gun tomorrow and check it.

Doc Johnson and lumpy85,
oh what great wisdom and technical advice you bring to this thead.
retards.
anyway...Krank, what year and model jeep do you have? i agree, it sounds like an ignition problem. it could be as easy as a dirty cap or bad plug wires. or, it could be carb related.
more info will help us help you.

It's an '89 YJ. I just rebuilt the carb. about 4 months ago. I'll change all the spark plugs and check the distributor cap and everything tonight.

Mine had similar problems once. It turned out to be a bad coil.
I was young and dumb at the time and took it to the dealership.
The tech showed me the bottom of the coil. It was swollen and domed outward.
The engine would run ok when cold, but as it warmed up, it would start sputtering, stumbling, no balls......
Basically, when the coil warmed up, it stopped saturating the voltage, causing a weak spark condition.
