: Off road carbs?
Keith Haw 10-04-2001, 07:49 PM I know FI is the way to go but don't have the bucks for that right now. So what carb is good for the 231 V6? Also, is there a writeup anywhere to modify it for off road? I've been told the Motorcraft 2100 series is good when modifed. Any comments?
Thanks
Keith
66CJdean 10-04-2001, 08:24 PM Go find a Q-Jet from a 4.1 Cadillac. They are by far the best for off-roading.

Or a qjet from a 3.8L Buick Station wagon That's what mine came from. Still sitting on the workbench waiting to be installed though.
TornadoTJ 10-05-2001, 09:07 AM I'd like to know more about this too, but for the sake of argument let's say I'm sticking with a 2 bbl carb on a 304.
WillyPete 10-05-2001, 10:32 AM most FSJs come with motorcrap, er, craft 2100 series stock. they're good carbeurators for offroad abuse. what's so special bout a qjet? i hear people ravin about 'em, but why are they so cool?
BlueYJ 10-05-2001, 11:07 AM The qjet on off-cambers wont run out of gas in the bowls. They can take the verticle driving. DONT NOT GET A HOLLEY they suck off-road.

xjxtreme 10-05-2001, 02:31 PM everyone around here runs q-jets turned around backwards on the manifold. The things will idle sitting on the rear bumper, or until you lose oil pressure and seize the engine. Don't get a Holley or Edelbrock! They Suck, my truck has a Edelbrock and it stalls on the slightest hill unless I have my foot in it.
Good Luck
Weezer 10-05-2001, 03:51 PM I had a holley it was now im running a ford flat top, its better then the holley but I want to get a q-jet.

BlueYJ I won't agree with this. I have run a Holley 390 on my 3.8 since 88 and it has worked pretty good for me. I have done some work to it to get it to work off-road but no amout of work is going to get it to work like the Q-jet. If I had to do it all over again I would go Q-jet for sure.
I haven't touch the motor craft on mine, except ofr the idel and mixture and it runs Like a champ. It runs on off cambers greatI have had it running at about 90 degrees when i was gettinjg flip back over and it ran until I was back on all fours no problems
NE-RokToy 10-05-2001, 05:16 PM If a 2bbl is all you need get a motorcraft, bolt it on and go. It is definatly one of the best offroad carbs and is easy as hell to work on. If you need more carb get a Q-jet.
now for a question: what years are you guys getting the small Q-jets off of??? i have a 795cfm sitting on my 4.3 right now
punkskalar 10-06-2001, 08:20 AM I run a holley 390 as well and it actually works well once you lower the float just a hair, and extend the bowl vents so gas doesn't flow into the carb on angles... I have even thought about putting it on backwards just for craps... Oh yeah, with a fuel pressure regulator, you can crank the pressure down to like 1 0r 2 and it will really be sweet on the trails, however, it wil suck on the road, so get one that is easily adjusted at the end of a trail ride. Oh yeah, the q-jet is still better, im just making what i have work for me... Hugh
holley makes a carb that looks like it would be great for this application.
Model 4360
looks like a quadrabog but better, no gay metering rods
it is around a 450 cfm 4barrel
good thinking on the old motorcraft flat top. is that the old 4 barrel like used on early 60s mustangs?
Maine Jeepah 10-06-2001, 08:43 AM I'm running the MC2100,on a 258 no problems here to speak of.
Bought a remanned one, bolted it on(with adapter, spent a little time adjusting the mixture, and it runs great!
Havent had to mess with it since.
Seems to work fine off camber, and on inclines, and declines.
A buddy of mine rns a webber(same motor), and following me up the same inclines his seems to bog.
For the money I'm very happy.
