: Need a shortened 60 front shaft - who/where/how much?
JUst had my front 60 shortened on the long side. I can measure once the housing is back, but I need a long side shaft around 31.5" long.
Unfortunately, both the shaft that came out and the spare I have are necked down versions :(
So what is the most economical plan to get a shortened shaft? But a stock one, send of off to Moser? Kinda sucks to pay shipping twice. Are there any companies out there with good prices who have shafts in stock and can cut & respline one for me?
And don't get into whose is better/more expensive - I never broke a birfield, I don't see me breaking 60 shafts either so I don't need top of the line here... :p
Also - anyone got some good prices on 60 U joints?
you need a set of camo 60 shafts from CTM. :flipoff2:
call gearman he can probally set ya up.

If you are payin' - I'll take some of those Camo 60 shafts - bling, bling :p
Does Gearman have a local place that does shortening/re-splining? Saving on shipping shafts to me then back out to somewhere else would be nice, that way I can afford to buy a spare too ;)
Weezer 12-13-2002, 12:29 PM DUTCHMAN does really good work, there price is good, and shipping isnt really that much if you go ups ground. Give them a call

dmeis 12-13-2002, 02:10 PM You can get a newer style "big" long side shaft and have Moser or Dutchman cut and respline.
I think the min. cut lenght is 3 3/8 due to the fact that they cut the spines and not roll them.
It will cost about $75 including shipping back to you.
I narrowed my chevy 60 by 2.5 inches (each side) and the only option I had was to get the Moser alloy 60. :flipoff2: Then they used the long side that I sent them to make the short side.

Stock long side Dodge shaft is 35.2", We narrowed the axle by 3.75" to get the perches to be able to bolt under stock Toyota hangers, so that *should* put the new shaft at 31.45" - which we were making sure there was enough room to shorten like you said. Once I get the housing back, and the ARB installed, I will take exact measurements to know what shaft length I need for sure. :)

..David the reason you never broke any birfields is because you never go wheeling:flipoff2: .so I imagine it will be hard to break those 60 joints to:p .Kidding aside I do have a couple of OEM spicer shafts that are 32 inches long that were manufactured by spicer for some type of forklift.I use them in the long side of my willys which was narrowed. They are 35 spline, non-neckdown and rolled splines..If interested pm me..
doctor_G 12-13-2002, 07:10 PM I just got a set of Dutchmans, very nice work.
BlueJeep 12-16-2002, 07:00 AM Moser will sell you a spicer axle cut to length for $140.

Well, we found something in the Spicer book that is probably what you have, but nobody seems to be able to get them. Even so - I doubt I would be able to lop .5" off of one of them to get it to work for me :(
onetonwillysands10 12-16-2002, 06:09 PM David,
yep they are out of production...that is why they are hard to get..

Figures :p
We were gonna narrow it to fit if we could find some, but since we couldn't - we didn't :)
Oh well, guess I gotta fork over for custom ones...
I am dragging this back up because I still need to order a custom shaft.
I would prefer to find a place where I can just buy a stock shaft from them and have them re-spline it too - saving me from sourcing one locally and shipping it to them.
I talked to *someone* whose web site/number I got off PBB a while back who could do it - but for the life of me I can't remember the web site or name or number :(
Anyone else?
Scout Dude 03-04-2003, 08:55 AM My narrowed shafts we from Dutchman.
2 stock shafts (they supplied), narrowed and shipped to me for $340ish.
RedBullJeep 03-04-2003, 08:58 AM call CTM, he can do regular axles OR chrome-moly for you if he isn't too slammed at the moment. www.ctmracing.com

Dan Dibble 03-04-2003, 09:13 AM Randys sells long sides for 85.00 each. They may be able to respline inhouse?

Gearman doesn't narrow the shafts..he probably sends them to Dutchman too;)
my bad.
they are " the place" for shorting axle tubes and they are working on getting a gear hobb to do the inner axles.
Well, no wonder he suggested I call Moser :p

crash 03-04-2003, 12:05 PM Dang, I am just about to spend $40 to have one cut/replined (chevy long narrowed 4")

Yeah... but that leaves out a few things :p
Like the shafts I had were necked down - so they can't be re-used.
So that means I gotta round up a new shaft somewhere, have them do the work, then ship it to me.
If I already had a shaft - things would have been a little different :p

I didn't ask about that... But figure for shipping the shaft both ways, plus the work itself.... it adds up.

Awww.... Considering the Dana 60 *really* only cost me $125 in the first place (trading is GOOD), the narrowing was free, and I already sold the stock shaft on eBay for $45 bucks... I think I am still ahead of the game ;)

Ahead, just a little :D
I about killed myself last night beating the long side knuckle off, got so pissed I just dropped a load for a neat little puller setup that should make the next one a WEEE bit easier...

I guess you are narrowing to fit Toy hangers? Me too ;)
David over at www.metalfusionfab.com did mine for me as a favor - he said it came apart easy as can be with the right techniques :p
I should actually have the housing under the truck and one side assembled by Sunday afternoon - woohoo!
crash 03-04-2003, 03:07 PM Its actually for a cj8 I am building for a guy (27 3/4" spring perch width), so pretty close to a toy...
Man, you are lucky, these 60 knuckles are alot more work pounding off than a d44 thats for sure

Well, he cut it, then sectioned the tube still in the knuckle, so it comes out real easy that way ;)
I figured you were putting one under your rig :p
