The driver's side hub and axle shaft from a 95-up XJ (297 u-joint) should just bolt in to an older XJ, right? Spline count on axle shaft, hub bolts line up, etc? What about a hub from a YJ, TJ, or ZJ?

The hubs are different, the shafts are the same though. Unless you want to turn the inside of your brake rotor, or get a new style rotor. the new style hub won't fit in a old rotor.

Yep, just swap the shafts.

You could swap in the newer knuckles (1 piece) and gain a bit of strength there. Then your stuck using the newer hubs, calipers etc.

Exactly what Eric said, I tried putting newer model hubs on my 90 xj when I had it, and the brakes where locked so tight jeep wouldn't even back up. If you swap rotors and hubs you should be OK.

I ran into this problem when I installed my axles w/ 4.10s. I wanted to reuse the 93 brakes, hubs and shafts in the 86 axle. They were in better condition.

It all comes down to the brakes.Unfortunately you can't put the 93+ brake pads on the ealier knuckles. The mounting system on the knuckle is completly different. So to do the swap of shafts with the hubs you actually have to swap knuckles too. PITA

FYI, The year split between the two brake types is '84-89 and '90 and newer. No parts other than axles are interchangeable between the two. This includes knuckles, hubs, calipers, and rotors. Some early '90 axles may have the early setup. Have fun! <IMG SRC="smilies/jeep1.gif" border="0">

The newer brake calipers, rotors, hubs, and knuckles are interchangeable with an earlier axle housing..but your right that you just cant swap newer hubs, brakes etc without swapping knuckles.
