ok, so, i can get a full drivetrain/computer/wiring harness, etc. from a wrecked 1989 xj with low miles - it's an I6 w/auto tranny - really, really cheap. how difficult would this be to put in my tj? as it is, i'm looking at replacing a cracked block right now to the tune of around $500-$600.
thoughts?

sounds like you are going backwards. the 89 was not a HO 4.0. you should get a later model engine. 95 and later will match your fuel system.
Are you swapping a 4 poper?

From what I hear swapping in an I6 instead of a 4banger is almost as big of a job as swapping some type of v8. You also may want to think of that. :D

What are the smog laws like over there? We can't get away with putting an old motor in a newer vehicle here in CA. Will that hold you up or is this a trail rig only?

If I were you I'd swap in a carborated V8.....much easier

i swapped 4.0s. the work of a motor swap can suck, but i wouldnt be daunted to do it again. what about just using the old block in your tj motor?

i'd love to do a v8 swap, but i can get the I6 and everything really cheap. only problem is that it has an aw4 tranny - is that too long for a tj?

I don't know as far as the tranny goes, but I helped swap a 4.0 into a TJ with a 2.5. It was a pretty involved job. Best advice I can give is to have the donor easily accessable and to change the computers. The computer might be the same part number on the outside, but they are programmed on the assembly line for each vehicle. It might sound strange, but it is Jeep, after all. Another thing to consider is to have a TJ with a 4.0 handy so you can get measurements. We did it by eyeball (gettin ready for Moab, long story) and got it within 1/4" of perfect, but we were LUCKY. Good luck, it's a fun project.:)
