: First impressions of Electrac...
WillYJ 12-15-2002, 01:21 PM I wish! Unfortunately, my first impression of the Electrac sux! Neither of them were able to make the journey from Randy's R&P to my house in VA without being damaged. See pics...

On one, the tab was broken off completely. The second picture tries to show the damage to the connector. This unit could still be used, but I do not prefer to take a chance with it due to the damage being to a plastic connector that is intended to seal out the elements for the electric locker to function. For $800, this is not ideal.
I believe the damage to be caused by the boxes being on their side, however, since I once worked for UPS...I am not sure this could have been avoided by Randy's packagers. The jury is still out on the customer service I will recieve. This transaction gave me heartburn as soon as it was made, due to the pricing. The saga continues...
I think I will order some ARB's if I am able to get a full refund for these lockers.

Ouch! We sell them for 720.00.....maybe I should raise our prices.
Let me know if you have any problems....Ill see if I can help you out:D

I found that out AFTER I purchased them from Randy's.
Do you have them in stock? Randy's told me you did not. Therefore, they would not pricematch. I'll add a little to this story...since there are so many chapters. Randy's would not pricematch after they placed the order. When I questioned them about this, they told me that "If you bought a T.V., they wouldn't renegotiate the price a couple of days later." That line really burnt my ass, because I bought my 36" TV from BestBuy last month. Fact of the matter is, BestBuy sure as hell would have pricematched...up to 30 days after the fact. I guess that analogy doesn't hold much water.
Anyhow...I am awaiting word on Randy's return policy. If I can get my money back, I am going ARB (most likely). How strong is the Electrac if it can't survive UPS? I think that I'll be a little harder on the unit than that.....

No, they are currently boxed back up for the UPS man to take them back.
Why do you not like the ARBs? My gear installer swears up and down that with his proper installation, I will have zero problems. I trust his work and judgement, so I think I will be opting to save money by going with the ARBs. (How many times have you heard "save money" and "ARB" in the same sentence??) [:)]
Kreep 12-16-2002, 10:22 AM The real issue is that fragile little contraption mounts right in harms way on the side of the diff cover. They give you a little metal bracket to cover it, but plan on fabbing something more substantial.
I haven't installed the tie-rod yet, but I'm thinking hi-steer is going to be a must.
If I had known, I would have waited for an OX...
Little lightning bolt on the cover has real bling-bling factor though ;)
Monkeyboy 12-16-2002, 12:08 PM I've never seen a trusty Detroit break a little ear thing or a dumb connector.
well i just started working at a 4x4 shop and a land rover came in and its front air leaker started leaking, so i pull it replace the small 0-rings pressure test it and reinstall it. well i go to test it and the damn thing still leaked. i would rather run a few wires than one blue hose to my diffs.

Bastard, you beat me to it:flipoff2:
RawkRash 12-18-2002, 02:11 PM I've seen the little ear things (teeth) break off a Detroit. A whole bunch of them broke off mine.
One little snapped axleshaft and it was off to Randy's for some of their customer "servicing".
About 4 months after buying and paying for a replacement Detroit, I got my refund check in the mail. So the end of the story was good.

Yeah, the lightning bolt is :rainbow:
I was already going histeer with my D44, so that never occurred to me.
Murfman 05-11-2005, 10:28 AM Just pulled this off the tractec page, any one use the new ones?
'Tractech's helical gear premium limited slip differential has been given an added feature. It will be available for selected axles with a lock / unlock feature. So, it will be a top quality limited slip design anytime, and when you are off road and need full lock-up to get where you are going, just flip the switch on the dash! "
Murfman 05-12-2005, 08:34 AM nm, i bought an Ox instead
MDMIKE 05-12-2005, 11:43 AM Another vote for the electrac being junk. After having to go on the website to get the "amended" instructions for adjustment of the actuator, I still had nothing but trouble with it comming "unlocked" in precarious situations. My last trip to Paragon yielded me a broken actuator and a twisted axle shaft shortly there after. When I got home, the electrac came out and the trusty spool went in. That was a pretty $$$ mistake on my part. My .02, take it for what its worth

Kreep 05-12-2005, 12:23 PM Well, I've got two years experience with the Electrac now. I'm happy with it.
The cover does not interfer with the tierod after all. I fabbed a solid brace that supports the other side of the box. No issues with the actuator or connectors and its spent plenty of time submerged.
Its held up fine to 36's and a heavy foot. We'll see if its up to 39.5's this year.
Initally engagement was quick and fully locked. I made the mistake of using synthetic lube and moly powder. Late last season it would unlock in reverse and take a couple of revolutions to relock going forward. I'm trying straight dino lube and hoping this will clear up.
You shouldn't use synthetic or limited slip lube in 'em

You dragged this up from 6 months ago to make your first post:confused:
My electrac broke after what I consider light usage, and the support for parts is horrible. The tabs are broken.
I just found out that parts for the electrac are not available and the Tractech has been sold to Eaton so it is uncertain that the electrac will continue to be produced.

Yep I sure did. And the person before me dragged it up from 3 years ago.
Sorry you're  .
