im pretty new to the mog world i have 404 steer axles for my buggy. ive been serching for after market parts i found machined boxes but really cant justify thier cost. i also found a box gusset kit that looks like flat steel. i guess im wondering how much of a issue are the boxes do they flex alot and break? i also want to know if anyone is making a axle truss kit ? or is it even needed. im running 42" iroc stickies should i have any concerns?

i am new to the mog world too but have done lots of research and you do need the box braces. they are cast, so the tiny bit of flex can cause a crack. as for the trusses, why not? I did f+r on mine. the stock housings are very beefy but a stiffer housing is always better right. ill post pics soon

i didnt buy any i cant afford them right now. but the ones i have been seeing are made by msi and i found them here on pirate. the only thing i have bought is a set of moly axle shafts from branik . i think the link is bullet proof unimog boxes or something like that.
Branik makes the machined steel boxes. 1/2 the price of the MSI (billet) units.
call them.

I didnt break a box this weekend, but I did shear off all 8 bolts that hold the portal box to the axle.

Bad news-All 8 bolts, 1 fill plug, and the little breather bolt sheared off.
Good news- Every single one of them came out like butter.
I cant tell you what a relief that is. Now I just have to find replacements.

I'm sure ARP makes something in that size if you feel that the failure was related to a strength issue, and not from the bolts backing out over time.

Nice save! I bet it drove 'wierd' for a minute...

I bet they got a little loose and sheered from vibrational fatigue. Still... DAMN!
Might check tension on all the rest of your hardware.
