we need to do it soon, since we need heat(up here in Canada) and it would help alot if we could get away with putting the new one in by just clamping the hoses that go to the heater core instead of draining it.
is this possible?
thanks!

The heater motor on a yj comes out through the passenger compartment. On a CJ you have to take the heater box out and drain the coolant. It will come right out on a YJ.
Getting ready to do the heater motor swap on my YJ.

Disconnect the hoses, fold them over and clamp them off, you'll loose some fluid not much. It's really a good time to replace the hoses though, nothing worse than a blown hose on road...

Snap-On, Mac, and Matco all make some sort of clamp off pliers for coolant hoses. I am sure you could find some cheapos at a parts store with a decent tool selection.

pinch the hoses off with the formentioned clamps, or vise grips, or other.

I just replaced the heater motor in my CJ last week. I disconnected the hoses to the heater core with a bucket underneath. I would estimate about 3/4 of a gallon drained out. I then just elevated the disconnected hose ends and that was it. The heater core in my Cj didn't need to come completely out in order to replace the motor (don't know about a YJ), but I did have to completely unbolt it from the firewall in order to get behind it. The hardest part of the whole thing was enlarging the hole to get the larger diameter motor in. Good luck, and enjoy the hurricane force winds! My buddy did this swap in his CJ and when he turned on his defroster, the black pastic covers in the winshield frame popped out!

I just asked for a blower motor out of a '73 Chevy Blazer with a 350ci motor and A/C at the local trustworthy auto parts store (NOT Kragen, Pep Boys, etc.) It was $28 brand new. I got $50 quoted to me by the local Napa, so shop around a little bit. If you need part numbers, I'll get the box out of my Jeep and get those later today. The motor came with a hole in the side of it the size of a quarter which needed to be plugged, but a plastic grommet cover ($.69) from the hardware store fixed that.

so the heater core has to be removed just to get to the darn motor.... on a YJ too?
what the hell were they thinking when they put that together:rolleyes:

I don't know how well the YJ's heater core is bolted to the firewall, but the Cj's is held on by only 4 small bolts (if I recall). I don't know why they didn't go with the larger motor to begin with

Check that out. It should answer any more questions should they arise.
