If the H1-A is anything like a HMMWV then its all time 4wd.

H1 is full time 4WD.
With the 242-AMG it's HL-H-N-LL. The t-case will only be locked in HL or LL, not in H.
Most of the time the T/C lock light should go out within a few feet of driving when shifting from LL -> H or HL to -> H.
In some rare cases, I find that the light won't go out for a while [driving half a mile or so].
I'd check the usual suspects, if the T/C Lock light is on all the time, check for electrical faults in the dash and on the t-case wiring [ speed sensor and t/c lock light].
If the truck drives fine, I suspect an electrical fault somewhere.
Try:
-Running on a loose surface, all ranges, try reversing and forward and see if the light turns off.
Check:
-T/C Light switch on t-case
-Dash/light circuit wiring
When was the last time the t-case was serviced? I've seen H1's that are 15 years old which never had the oil changed in the hubs, diff and t-case...
Is the t-case lever being fully engaged? Does the light turn off in N? If the nylon shift fork pads are worn out, you would be in a situation where HL and LL will work but H will slip to N all the time, requiring you to be locked all the time to drive the truck at all.

That's good news, it happens sometimes, the lock won't disengage occasionally, Usually to reverse or driving a short distance will unlock the t-case.

Its still all time 4wd.
Your truck is full time AWD, so theres no 2 wheel drive option. The 242-AMG transfer case has High, High Lock, Neutral and Low Lock.
