Working on 406 mog axle swap in cj7. Trying to justify disk brake but seem high dollar. Has anyone tried a pinion brake on a mog??

surly it must be cheeper to do disc brakes on the 406 than say a 404 where all the parts have to be made and welded on
all you would need is all the 416 disc brake components and bolt them on
i know i paid £100 for four worn discs (when merc say worn they are still 32mm thick solid iron discs and £100 for the four hub adapters im using iveco truck calipers so ive got to make a caliper bracket
or you could get the outer portal box and use the merc calipers

"Trying to justify disk brake..."
Just curious: what benefit do you expect to see?

On a highway Truck with a heavy load it would be a good idea, but on a CJ7 I don't see the problem with stock drum brakes.

multiple gearsets = a lot of backlash = a fair amount of distance traveled before your wheel stops, after you hit the brakes.

you trying to save weight or what? the drums should stop a cj7 no problem.

Dont like stock drum for couple reasons .. too heavy, water dirt sand all bad. It is another gear set vs rockwell but "lots of backlash", not big deal its roughly .010 to .020 more. Doesnt seem like much to me.

I like the gear reduction you get through axle. I also like that brakes and lines are out of harms way(almost).

I'll check out the stock disc, I had no idea, not very familiar with these axles just randomly found frame and axles in the corner of the universe (holy rednecks) and didnt know what they had... I guess i really dont either. But they look bulletproof

thanks for input

Something to consider is where the brake will be mounted. Most people doing mog axle swaps already run into oil pan clearance problems with the pinion.

Ran drums on my 404's, worked great till you got any water, sand or mud in them. Then i would lose about half my braking force. Leaky wheel cylinders and the need to run residual valves so you don't get air in the system when you roll over was two more drum brake problems i had. Only thing with stock 406 disc is you have to run a bigger wheel which are quite a bit more money then a H1 wheel. I looked at pinion brakes but to get a rotor and caliper to fit it would have interfered with my oil pan in the front and upper links in the back when flexed.
