Thinking of doing a trail run in the ridgeline from cisco to meadow lake. Anyone know if the campfire restrictions are lifted?

The restrictions have remained unchanged this year. (not restricted) You still need a campfire permit and remember to take a lot of pictures.

if the gate is a issue cant we just go in at eagle lakes and dominate the trails from there?

You can until you get to the first River crossing.

I got an e-mail from the folks at Cisco Grove campground on Dec. 10th stating that the Forest Service had reopened the Fordyce trail "until there is a significant accumulation of snowfall." I am assumming this means the gate was reopened.

Sorry for the delay in my posting this. I have some other concerns going now that are taking up my time. I will attemp to verify this and see if it's still in force and if it includes the entire trail.

Word of warning. The last time we were on the trail the conditions were similar to what I imagine they must be now. Very little snow with warming and then freezing. Thin coating of ice on everything making the trail treacherous. Most of our crew (including the serious rigs) had a lot of trouble on every uphill. It would be very easy to break or plain old get stuck. IF the trail is open and if you go make sure you plan for breakage and many days (and many cold nights) on the trail.

If you go Eagle Lakes....you're SERIOUSLY in for a treacherous decent to the 1st river crossing...and getting back up? lol.

I suggest you read my thread from Saturday.

Didn't do it justice in person. There are 4 total on my other thread.

It reminded me of that movie The Day After Tomorrow.....like it was a raging river...and literally flash froze in place. There are places were it is easily 3 feet thick of ice. Walking on it, without spikes.....ain't going to happen...so even if you controlled your descent somehow...just walking around to move the winch cable would be crazy....and that's not even accounting for how you keep your rig from sliding apon disconnect to move winch points. LOL.

no joke, bring GOOD boots to walk out with cause you'll probably need them.

I was able to verify that the WHOLE trail is still open as of today. The gate at Cisco is open and will be until we get a bunch of snow. The number at Cisco is (530) 426-1600 is you want to call and check to see if it's still oen before you go.

However, and this is a BIG however, the trail is treacherous and unforgiving in thesse conditions. It would be every easy to get stranded even with a running vehicle due only to a complete absence of traction. If you must go take a trip out to Fordyce Lake but don't go down to the river or stay on the uphill before water crossing #1. Even then other parts of the trail might still be very dangerous. Camping at Meadow would be killer but going down the which hills? Don't think so. Take plenty of warm clothing and supplies and as Scott said a good pair of boots for the walk out!

Personally I would just hit the Con. Way safer.

Maybe thats what I need, studs for my sticky crawlers.

Honestly a good set of chains is about the only thing thats going to get traction. On the last trip up there I know I would have put them on if I had them. :D I could have used some for my boots as well!

Ice skates?

At least you wouldn't need to buy ice for the cooler.

Angelo just was stranded for the night...22 hours to get from Committee to Fordyce. Didn't go prepared...lesson was learned without incident, thankfully. He said it was a sheet of ice...
