: Transfer case won't stay in 2wd
cj7jeep81 12-18-2002, 06:46 AM I bought a 78 K-10 about a year ago. Since I have had it, I have already rebuilt the engine and want to start working on the transmission/transfer case. My problem is I can't get it to stay in 2wd. If I put it in 2, it either won't engage, or it will slip back into 4wd. I really haven't messed with it much, but want to get it fixed. I have heard this is a common problem, but couldn't find any info doing searches. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
MOGXJ44 12-18-2002, 07:21 AM This sounds like a real problem. Guess you'll just have to go wheelin' more often.

cj7jeep81 12-18-2002, 07:26 AM I guess that does give me a good excuse :) . But, I would like to get it fixed. The 305 doesn't put out enough power, and I am sure it is putting out less since it is sending some of it to the front wheels (even though they aren't locked in).
rcurrier44 12-18-2002, 09:14 AM Witch t-case is it? I had that problem with a 79blazer that had a 203 tcase in it. It was the hurst shifter box. My fix was to rig up a dual shifter setup.
cj7jeep81 12-18-2002, 11:04 AM I am not sure. I know it has a TH-350 and a 305 V-8.
According to the previous owner, the transfer case could be put into 2 Hi, 2 Lo, 4 Hi, and 4 Lo. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I can only get it into 4 Hi.
sounds like a 203. did the previous owner say if a part time kit was added? but you said it won't go into 2WD...
should be a 203 though....
cj7jeep81 12-18-2002, 12:04 PM He didn't say. He had only had it for about a year, so I doubt he would have put one in. Plus since he told me it had a 350 in it when I bought it, I doubt he would have known if it had the part time kit.
reddwarf 12-18-2002, 06:32 PM So....if it's a full time case it would have to have a part time conversion or it would not have 2wd at all.
Sounds like a conversion since your plate says 2lo on it (my buddy's had a kit with 2lo position and a new plate with it marked on there)
cj7jeep81 12-19-2002, 04:55 AM Ok. Is this transfer case rebuilding? Or should I get a different one?
mr4x42u 12-19-2002, 05:26 AM Look at the t-case..if its a skinny alum case trans it has a bad shift fork wich is a common problem and if thats bad it has taken out the bearing and race too..You looking at about 300bucks to fix it.thats what it looks like its a 208...no telling what you have under there..I don't even think the 305 was offered in a truck in 78 was it?..I thought that did not start till the early 80's,and I think it was only in half tons..who knows..but yea I agree I think it should have a 203 also..it will look like the 205,,cast case..
cj7jeep81 12-19-2002, 05:54 AM It is a '78 half ton stepside. The casting on the engine block says it was made in either '77 or '78 (can't remember). Are there any numbers on the case I can look at?
mr4x42u 12-19-2002, 07:36 AM I'm sure there are but not a clue as to tell how to tell..i just have gotten used to looking at them to tell..look to see if its an alum or cast houseing to start..that will narrow it down to 2.If its a half ton maybe it did come with a 305?I still think that was a 80's thing.sorry i could not be more help with the numbers..does the floor say 4low lock or 4 hilock and 2wd and all that jazz or does it say 2hi/4hi/4/lo...I betting if its a cast case its a 203..take a look...
cj7jeep81 12-19-2002, 10:42 AM I will have to double check, but I am 99% sure it says 4 low loc and 4 hi loc.
mr4x42u 12-20-2002, 06:03 AM Then its a 203..could have the same problem my 208 had,,worn shift for and most likly dearing..It will be worth fixing..Thats not a bad case.Unless you want to go to a 205,wich is kick ass.But $.I think you could fix yours for half the cost of a used 205..but don't know for sure with out looking..like I said it cost me about 300 to rebuild my 208,half the cost of a used 205.so I just used it.It don't see hevy wheeling.just towing..
cj7jeep81 12-20-2002, 06:11 AM Mine won't see anything heavy either, so that sounds like a good idea. How difficult is it to rebuild? And where is a good place for parts?
mr4x42u 12-20-2002, 10:19 AM I went through a local truck shop that gives me my work discount and they ordered it from who know where..Check with a local 4x shop or a 4x mag for the best prices..I have seen complet kits around everywhere.I just dont really log in my head where they are...Unless you have pullers and an array of tools it might be best just to have a shop do it..i had to borrow some stuff to get mine done and had to run here and there to get bearing pressed on and off.pain in the ass.I check with a local guy and he only wold have charged me 150 to do it..If I knwe then, what I know now I wold have paid the 150,hell,,I would have paid 200..sort of a pain in th AZZ!!!Yake care...shawn:D
cj7jeep81 12-20-2002, 10:27 AM Ok, thanks a lot. I will probably take it to a shop.
