Hello all, I was posting to inquire about the difficulty of rhino lining/herculining my 1970 FJ40. Id like to get the interior done which I dont think would be too hard but how about the underbody? Must I do a frame off? I dont know much about this process so could you guys who have done this to your FJ's shoot some advice this way?

'preciate it,

CWB

I just got my FJ40 floor pan Line-x'd Looks great and the texture is perfect. I stripped EVERYTHING out of the tub and brought it to them to do. Make sure you have good paint every you want them to shoot so you will get max. adhesion.

Prep work is the key to good adhesion with the herculiner. Make sure you clean the areas well, go over it will a scotchbrite pad. Then clean it up with some acetone. Remove any loose paint. Make sure you stir the herculiner well before and during application. I used a paint stirer powered by a cordless drill to make sure the rubber particles in the paint were well mixed.
Use the special roller in larger areas and a paint brush in the tight places, Don't use the paint brush like you normally would, you need to dab it instead of using flat strokes. I had to get an extra brush since the one that came with the kit got wasted quick.
Mask off areas you don't want herculined, and remove the tape before it dries. Otherwise you won't get it off.
Once that stuff is on, it won't come off. It will stick to your hands and clothes, and won't wash off! Wear old clothes and rubber gloves.
The only downfalls I found with the herculiner is that it will fade if exposed to the sun, and it is a really rough surface. But will wear smoother with use.:skull:

I plan on using the herculiner for the cargo area of my 60 then putting down a carpet kit over it. I used to use it all the time when I did mobile audio/video installation. ( not pidly circuit city stuff. I talking 20-30000$ worth of stereo equipment and customization.)

It works great but cleanup is a PITA. Definately wear clothes you will never want to wear again and gloves.

i did the interior of my forty in one weekend, but took ages to dry

that black stuff stays on your hands for a while

try not to get any on your "hootus"

i wish i had known about that stuff when i did a frame off :(

it is good gear, battery acid will eat it, and so will lots of metal scraping at it (the bed of my 40 looks a little tacky) the rest is still perfect!

I managed to get it off my hands in about 1 week by scraping the skin with a knife every day . I dont think I would try that on the 'hootus'.
Someone has got to find that story for those of us who havent read it.
