: Hill up from Crossing #1 was a little icy
atvobsession 12-18-2011, 12:10 AM Took the quads....tried to get winch hill #1....but didn't really feel like spending a 1/2 day trying to winch back up....it was like a river froze in mid stream.
Here's a video near the top

Winning!
scottz 12-19-2011, 06:19 PM wow. that could get amazingly ugly in a 4k lb rig. Wonder if some red label crawlers would work?
Tinman 12-20-2011, 09:02 AM Red labels...good one ha ha.
kdub0013 12-20-2011, 01:56 PM That is so badass, thanks for sharing, now I know where I will not be going for the next couple months :D
Kodiak 4x4 12-21-2011, 12:15 PM i had red label crawlers in a 4000lb rig
on monday it was a 22hr all night winch fest and brutal
i'm not hitting fordyce again until its dry!
lightfoot 12-21-2011, 03:40 PM Time to put lots n lots of hex head screws into your tires ala the screws in tire thread in the Rubicon forum a year or so back
renolaw 01-03-2012, 11:03 PM slipping and sliding around is fun enough on an ATV. I've had a few times, however, sliding backward on ice-- a death ride--in a loaded Jeep and its no fun whatsoever... In ur video there are some rocks to grab some traction, but man oh man, the helpless backward sliding in a 4x4 for anything longer is downright major soil the shorts pucker factor, and time for some prayer. In two of the death slides, only thing that stopped going over a cliff was smashing into another rig and the other time slamming backwards into a tree. The 3rd time we just rode it out for about 50', which felt like forever, slow motion impending doom feeling.

Key words: PUCKER FACTOR :eek::eek: No thanks on all that.

DoubleXL 01-08-2012, 08:58 PM Just got back from running to the first crossing. Great Day of Wheelin in January!:D
We headed up Rattlesnake and made it over the summit, just to see what it was like up there. We turned around about half way down the back side, but it looked like making it to the lake shouldn't be a problem (with chains). Just a few scary patches of ice past the summit.
Ran the five dollar trail from the campground to Eagle Lakes. Had lunch at the top of Driveline and headed in from there. We took our chances and slid down the ice flow (yes, it still looks the same as 12/20). Made it down with no issues, and getting back up wasn't really that bad. We only had to pull cable once, and then only to get over a rock face that was near the top. Brian (green cruiser) made it up unassisted.:grinpimp:
BEWARE! The last 150' to the crossing is even worse that the section at the top. Once you get to it, you are committed... and it looks ugly. We walked it first and elected not to try it.
renolaw 01-08-2012, 10:53 PM dealing with similar situations on a trail run where we HAD to get thru, a quick helper is to awalk the icy section and as you go, scatter sand, dirt or pebbles on the ice and it does help with traction. Another guy used kitty litter but that might not be enviro friendly and is costly.
MochaMike 01-08-2012, 11:07 PM I was thinking a a few dozen 1/4" machine head screws screwed into the thick tire lugs via a cordless drill would help
jethrodeg 01-09-2012, 10:44 AM I think Brian has a few years left in those tires.

Yeah, the bald SXs don't seem to be slowing him down much. In fact, the rest of us have decided that we've been changing tires way too soon...

Really? Why risk yourself and $100s to $1000s of damage!?!? I mean there's wheeling and just being stupid! Is there a pot of gold on the other side? :shaking:
Is Fordyce lake frozen?
.
jethrodeg 01-09-2012, 11:15 PM What's a stoopid risk to one person is a fun adventure to another.
scottz 01-09-2012, 11:27 PM Hell, that looks safer than my ride to work through north highlands, At least up there I'd get to worry about hitting trees and other rigs and not that my civic is painted red...
scottz 01-09-2012, 11:30 PM anyone want to go this weekend? I'd go, but I don't have a winch. I'll bring beer.

need one of those propane torches from HF to melt the 150' and expose some rock.

I guess you're going to have to risk $100s to $1000s of damage to find out...:flipoff2:

if those trail pictures look stupid. Maybe you shouldnt even be worrying if fordyce lake is frozen! Cause you probibly wouldn't leave the paved road anyway!

Agreed! Wish my junk was ready for this trip... way to tear it up!
scottz 01-10-2012, 07:28 AM maybe I can borrow a set of chains or some red label crawlers for the trip, I'd hate to dent my truck all up sliding into stuff.

Wonder if CA plate "pinball" is taken?
I'm with grandma on this one.

floppy 01-10-2012, 05:28 PM I guess someone has to stay on the porch while the big dogs run, fine by me... They can make sure the beer stays cold and the dishes get washed.
I'm starting to think Brian has an advantage on us. That's a lot of rubber contact. And they flex well too! Pretty amazing how he still goes so well in the snow? Maybe we should start the "hardwood" club? If you know what I mean:smokin::smokin::smokin:
brownhunter 01-10-2012, 05:56 PM I guess. Well people do what thier gunna do reguardless of what can happen. I mean people commit crimes everyday and some goto jail for it. I guess the same goes with doing other stupid stuff. Have some beer and drive the trails. DUI is a crime too.

Yeah, go with the Red Labels!
Do you know a good body man to work out the inevitable trail damage you will get due to all the additional traction.
Just be careful, I would hate to see you roll. (Again)
:D

Easy there big boy, no need to get all bitter. Sounds like maybe you could use a bit of adventure with a side of fun. And for the record the beer is on the porch with you? I'm driving...
