: how much $ do you have in your engine?

ok the reason I ask is this, I have a 350 small block that would need a complete rebuild machining, magna fluxing and all new internals and the like, am I better off getting a retired cruiser and gutting it for electronics and complete engine or would the rebuild be cheaper, hence the question, how much coin do you have tied up in your engine. I know this will vary based on build budgets and desired level of performance, but I'm just trying to get an idea of what would be better. thanks.

About 5k in my blown (as in dead) 302, transferring heads ($1200)over to my 351W low buck for now ~$500, eventual SEFI 418 stroker that will run ~$5-6k.

I'm estimating that I'll end up having around $3k-$4k in my engine when it is all said and done... this is a full rebuild on a BB cady with only the block, head castings, and crank being re-used. This is for a semi-stock engine. The only thing not going to be stock is the intake manifold and the EFI but those are a little ways off. This is also ALL the sheetmetal, accessories(alt, PS pump, etc), etc being new.

This is a 400ft-lb of torque at 2400rpm and 230hp@3600 rpm monster in stock form... No estimate with new intake or camshaft:p And it should be good for a couple hundred thousand miles:D

The motor I'm installing in the next week-two: $350 (1991 TBI 350 from a van - whole van for $200, motor may actually only constitute a portion of that cost....) Add in the VSS and some misc stuff and you get $350 or so.

Motor I'm pulling: 1978 350 4-bolt hi-nickel block, .060, shaved heads, flattops, 1.6 roller tips, balanced, Weiand intake, quadrajet, Comp Cam Extreme....maybe $2000 in that one. Originally built it in 1991, and have done one no-machine-work rebuild to it since. First day out, 110 mph and smokin tires for 2 blocks....I miss all that power....

Yeah, I know...I usually over build everything..but I am building a second rig right now and I don't want to spend money on the Scout 'til the other one is done.

I have about $600 in the 5.0 HO itself. I have about $1000 more in bolt on parts.
That is one of the main reasons I wanted a 5.0 HO engine, it comes from the factory with a great EFI set up and forged pistons. You can install them with 80K from a junk yard and get 275 hp with bolt on parts.
I just cant see build ing a $3500 engine, then run it upside down to try and re-right the rig after a rollover.
If I blow up my mill, I go to the junk yard pull another with moderate mileage for a few hundred bucks, swap my cam and other bolt ons, and have it back on the trail in a couple of days.

I assume that's a steel manifold. It is probably broken where the tubes enter the collector. I would suggest getting an aftermarket manifold. They have a couple of flex joints in them to prevent breakage.

After about 7 years, I have about $200 in my motor. That is just for a Q-Jet rebuild, tune up, vc gaskets, water pump and starter. It's a 4 bolt 350, double camel hump heads, unknown cam grind, stock intake (free Performer RPM wating for install) and headers. Runs like a sewing machine. I have actually gone wheeling on 7 cylinders when an intake rocker arm nut wouldn't stay on.

...my most expensive motor (now with a blown rod!) cost me $7000 or so back in '87. Supercharged, ported, blueprinted, magnaflux, shotpeened rods etc. etc. It has cost me way more than this over the years in broken parts LOL! The last two transmissions lasted 13,000 and 12,000 miles the last time the case broke in half! These were 700R4's mind you but built with all the goodies/upgrades new converters both times etc. Broken transfercase many times once broke the case in half, broken thrown drivelines--once at 90+MPH driveshaft putting a hole in the tank on its way out. Never found the back half of the shaft as it flew off the highway into a lake while shifting into 3rd at 6000RPM, many broken gears, axles etc etc. I'm pulling it for a 305 (may put the huffer on since my truck goes smog exempt next year (finally) while I disassemble and build another motor!

I have about $2500 complete. 407 ft/lbs @2050, 335 hp @4500. I built it over a few months and got some decent deals. I did however go with the best machinist in town, best and most expensive. Depending on what you are looking to build for, you could do a motor start to finish with a junkyard motor for around $500-$600. All depends on how much you want out of the motor.

I went to save money and rebuild a junkyard motor. I did the labor myself and still spent $1000.00 on a stock level rebuild with all the machine work and new parts. Shoulda just bought a crate.

That's just for the 350. The TBI and headers and stuff gets outta control pretty quick.

Well...Mine sort of strayed past budget :) Budget was $2K.

My machine work alone was $1K
$550 for botom end(good deals on good parts)
$700 for the cam, carb, and other litle things.

I think that is what I am at right now. I will probably end up spending another $400-500 before it is installed.

I have the short block done, I was going to finish the rest this weekend, but not sure now. If this thread is still around, I will give you a final tally.

Junkyard/used engines are almost always cheaper. But you get limited life out of them. Just depends on if you can find a relativily "unused" one.

And this tally is for a 383. Should move my Jeep quite well :D

Way, way too much. Way over built LT-4 bored and stroked to 383, H.O.T. cam, Callies 4340 crank, Manley 4340 H-beam rods, Childs & Albert zero-gap rings, SRP 11:1 pistons, Crane 1.6 roller rockers, ported, polished, balanced, blueprinted, port matched and ported LT-4 exhaust manifolds. Custom fabricated setup for a crank driven fan from a Suburban. Dual 2.5" exhaust w/Random cats and DynoMax bullet race mufflers (tight fit w/the 4-link setup). Street and Performance wiring harness. MAP setup off earlier LT-1 with custom chip from the Turbo Shop. Estimated 450 hp with 450 ft-lb torque.

I wouldn't do the same again. Now I'd use a Z-06 and stroke it and bore it as much as possible. Guess I'm a slow learner.

Actually, I'd just use a crate engine, probably the Ram Jet as fuel injection is the most important feature to me.

I just got all my parts and machining done for my 350, it is still on the engine stand but I think I have everything I need. I did some traiding and was able to build it for just under 1400$.

Block maged, boored, cam bearings in, etc
Conecting rods maged and reconed
Heads totaly rebuilt with mild port & polish
comp cam
used roller rockers
used performer intake
Holly Truck Performer carb
Flat top pistons
new crank
all bearings, seals, rings, timing chain, oil pump, lifters, push rods, etc

You can do it cheeper (the one I have in the rig now cost me 35$) but I was tired of blowing used engins up.
