Do you run in from the new side, Loon Lake or
from Wentworth the traditional side.

98% of the time, it's Loon for the convenience.

I've only gone in from the spillway at Loon.

I don't want to sound totally stupid here, but what do you mean by the " new side " ?

BTW, Jeepndel, you live in Moke Hill ? What's your rig look like. I work in Martell. I wonder if we've crossed paths ?

Loon Lake is the "new side" The part of the trail that is the county road is Wentworth. Several if not many years ago, that was the way everyone went.

Reddog, yea, Moke Hill. I drive a Red TJ with a snorkel. It's the only one around. Where do you work in Martell? I'm in the Motherlode Rockcrawlers Four Wheel Drive Club. We meet in Jackson. You should come by a meeting?
you can see my jeep on my web site.

Done both, but prefer Wentworth when entering and Loon when leaving. Don't know why, just do :flipoff2:

There wasn't a choice of the Tahoe side.

Living in Sparks and having access to a cabin at Tahoe, that is my main route in to the springs.

I also like taking the trail along the Rubicon river towards Hell Hole.

Nice site, Nice rig Too !

I take all my tranny work to Amador Transmissions...What's his name , Rich ?, he's always promoting your club. He bought that Blue Scout II from one of my buddies.

There's just a few of us left working at the Co-Gen plant over by the Particle board Plant. Most everybody got layed off awhile back because we have no contract, we used to sell our power to Enron, nuff said about that, everyone's heard that story.

Hey Simple Man ! What's the trail like down to Hellhole ? That sounds like fun.

I've run the trail both ways, and there is lots of cool stuff coming in from Wentworth Springs! I'm all for running both sides, as long as there are enough challenges to keep the unprepared people off the trail.

Usually Loon, but on busy weekends, like Labor Day or Memorial Day, we go in from McKinley or Wentworth. Considering the sometimes +4hr wait at the gatekeeper, it is usually quicker.

The "new" trail is actually the Ellis Creek 4x4 Trail. It runs from Loon lake spill way to the junction near Ellis creek. Unlike the Rubicon Trail, the Ellis Creek 4x4 Trail is closed during winter months to motor traffic.

This article may help:
http://www.4x4wire.com/access/news/fotr/press_rel_10_02/

Just to keep terminology straight.... this map may help, too.
http://www.4x4wire.com/access/news/fotr/press_rel_10_02/FOTRmapped.gif
In the map, you see the northwest corner of Pleasant/Loon Lake, where Ellis Creek empties into it:
* bold brown line is the official conty-recognized Rubicon Road that connects Wentworth Springs and Rubicon Springs
* dotted red line is the trail between Loon Lake and Ellis Creek, it extends off the bottom of the map to the Loon Lake dam spillway
* orange line is the user-created section of trail that is now closed off
* green line is a section of the original Loon access trail that hasn't see a lot of recent use
* short purple/blue line is the new trail FOTR put in across private land
* short red line headed northwest is the dirt road to McKinstry Lake

FWIW, I enjoy both the unmaintained county road that runs in from Wentworth Springs and the more recent access in from Loon Lake.

Snow=Wentworth
Sun=Loon

:)

I prefer Wentworth, less traffic and maybe a little more of a challenge.

Never wheeled wentworth or tahoe side. Farthest I went was the springs for the round up and back out loon. Maybe this summer I will wheel all the way through:D

50/50 on entry. With Gate Keeper gone, Wentworth more fun, Loon quicker Usually exit via Loon if not going all the way thru.

Coming from Reno we usually end up running Tahoe in to Loon or Spider then back out Tahoe. It's long but it gives you a hell of a lot of time on the trail.

going backwards from tahoe is my favorite way. i usually go out loon but prefer wentworth time permitting.

i love rolling in night or day and stopping at the overlook area and just marveling at one of the best views in the sierra. that view with a full moon is totally badass.
