Survival Equipment I like to carry in my range rover. Luckily it has a build in storage are now. I'm going to get a rack for the roof to carry the tire when I'm out wheeling.

I think I'll add some oil and water to the mix as well. Any other suggestions.

Cheers

Cant see anything.

Jumper Cables and Air Hoses. I installed a air compressor under the hood and will plumb it into the stock air tank under the rig. I removed the air suspension and with with Old Man Emu Coils, so the air suspension crap has been canned.

All that gear fits in that small space? Must be nice, lol. I have you beat as far as total gear, but mine fills the cargo area. I think this is about the only pic I have with most of my gear loaded:

http://i580.photobucket.com/albums/ss247/Elwenil/Ramcharger%20Pics/0201111441.jpg

Just in the pic I have some 4x4 cribbing, canvas tarp/awning that is very versatile, tent, and sledge hammer. In the tool box is enough chain, wire rope, shackles and rigging to erect a small building, axes, come-a-long, etc. On top you can see my MOLLE ruck and patrol pack. The MOLLE medic bag is not in the truck in the pic. Not going to go into the contents but they are along the same lines as your gear, just more of it with the addition of weapons and ammunition. There is more gear I can carry if needed, but this is my usual "bugout" and wheeling load.

looks fine or whatever, but I dont' see shit for spare parts.

In my xj I carry, axle shafts, u joints, coil, plugs wires, water pump, fuel pump, cam sensor, crank sensor, radiator hoses, oil, etc, etc.

Where at in WY, I grew up there?

I have not broken anything. rover axles are pretty stout with a stock size tire. I've used plenty of wheel spin and still not toasted any axle or drivetrain parts.

I'm currently in Billings Montana. My wife has one last semester left for her Bachelors degree and we will be moving back to Powell or Cody Wyoming this summer. I may be going down next month if my job prospect works out.

I also carry a Bersa Ultra Compact 45 acp for self defense. Conceal of course, legally. Still looking for a Winchester Model 12 in good shape for the bears.:grinpimp:

miniyota - you really have packed a lot into a small space!

I just got that same Estwing axe for Christmas. It seems like a decent affordable ax that is made in the USA. Have you used yours much, and if so, how do you like it?

I carry spare parts in my diesel Burb in an action-paker: aftermarket electric fuel pump (had to use the spare once so far), belts (mine is not serpentine, so I have more than one), fuel filter, radiator hoses, hose clamps, front Warn hub, d-shaft U-joints, valve stems, plus duct tape, electrical tape, bailing wire, and zip-ties. I can fit some other stuff in the action-packer that folks have mentioned above, like 4-way lug wrench, come-a-long, tow strap, fluids, funnel, trash bags, fire starting materials, tire repair kit, jumper cables.

I'd like to build a simple sleeping platform at wheelwell height with storage underneath, so that I could start keeping all my stuff in the Burb (like recovery gear, bags of tools, 12V compressor and hose, shovel, a couple boards for traction or jacking) rather than having to unpack everything but the action-packer when I get home. Plus that would make camping more attractive to the wife and 2 small kids - they don't like being cold or wet. :)

And I need to get a decent first-aid kit together - I have an OK off-the-shelf one that we try to remember to throw in whatever vehicle we're taking on a trip (even a road trip), but I need to get better about that.

I like my Estwing axe a lot! i used it this summer a lot while camping and wheeling. it swings very nice and has good balance. I thought it might vibrate pretty bad when you try to split a log or cut a branch, but it doesn't. It stays sharp as well. I think I paid $34 for mine at Home Depot.

I think i'm going to add some u-joints for the driveshafts, but that is about all i'm really concerned about right now. I'll probably pick up some spare axle shafts for the front. The rear axle is supposed to be a full floater design. The pinions are high pinion as well. I've never hit them on anything, i just get caught up on the hitch when coming off large boulders. :smokin:

I have to ask then. Why carry a ful set of wrenches/sockets if you are choosing to not carry spare parts?

when possible I try to find ways to minimize gear or the room it takes up....you know what I mean, weight blah blah

instead of that newspaper for fire, you can use a pill bottle stuffed full of cotton balls. Take the cotton balls and mash them full of vasoline (work it into the cotton ball with your fingers) and then stuff them into the pill bottle. You can stuff a lot of them in there.

When you pull one out, pull it apart a little to fluff it up and spread it out (keeping it in one piece) and then hit with a match or metal match or whatever. Best way I have found to start fires, the little suckers burn plenty long enough to get your fire going.

And in my experience, if you run an automatic, bring along an extra starter. Seen guys get stranded when their starter shits the bed, and thats why I love manuals.

Have a larger px bottle filled with gun powder and another filled with gun cotton, it lasts longer and will ignite damp wood as long as it's not too wet.

I try and make my survival gear differ from my trucks gear. IE: my clothes, hygiene kit, first aid/surg trauma kit, signaling equipment, maps, emerg food/water rations, machete, snaring/trapping supplies, manuals, fire starting/chemicals det cord/shock tube and ignitors, sleeping bag, poncho and pancho liner, reusable emergency blankets, 200' of 550 cord, two zippo's, pair of boots, compass and a few packs of smokes all fit in my rucksack which only weighs around 50-60 or so pounds with 1.5 gallons of water.

The truck carries: an axe, a small 10 pound sledge, a wedge, misc hand tools, 25' of air hose, an air impact and sawzall, two 5 gallon water cans, two 5 gallon fuel cans, a small mechanical bottle neck jack, lug wrench, extra tune up kit (fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, wires, cap rotor, coil, ign/volt module, wheel bearings) fluids (ATF, oil, brake clean, grease) 100' of nylon rope, recovery strap, snatch block and a hand winch.

Thats all I can remember anyway...

that was where the spare tire went. The new spare tire is too big to fit in there so it'll go on the roof when i finish a roof rack. I think I may add my second battery to that space later this summer as well.

Gotcha. In my d1 I moved the battery to the floor behind the center console. Fits like OJ's glove, but I made it work lol.

One thing I do at home is only repair the typical stuff with tools on the rig, that way you absolutely know you have it with you on the trial. If you cant fully R&R all four axles and the drive shafts working out of your rig then you'll be stuck on the trail. After that you need an electrical kit, tire repair kit and fluids. If you carry this stuff you may not need to worry about survival.

Otherwise, you need fire, water, food, ropes, saw, shelter, weapon and a flare gun. Keep it simple if you really are talking about survival. Don't carry two of something before you have 1 of each of the necessities.
