To have an old 40 series as just a daily driver? If you only had a 15 mile commute, and california weather (4 actual seasons :D ), would you drive a stock ~restored pre 73 fj40 as a DD?I already have a capable wheeler, so it would mainly be for on road only duties...

If it makes you happy it is not wrong. If you can afford the gas, go for it.

I used to daily drive my FJ40 drum brakes and all.
And not in sunny CA but in the great white north where it hits -30 on a regular basis during the winter.

I drove my 79 daily for 10 years.
And I am working on making a 72 that I would trust daily.
This was in Vegas and in Reno..
The only part that sucks is the lack of AC in the summer.
And that can be solved by spending 1K :)

40's are the worst DD, in fact I actually take pride on haulin' ass around town in a 30 year old vehivle... Its even funner passin' POS Yj's and stuff that are 10 years old and fallin apart.:D

I've daily driven and wheeled my '40 for the past 14 years. I still enjoy driving it. It is an absolute kick in the summer with the top off, stereo up, looking down at everyone else sealed up in their little econoboxes.
You also get to know every little sound, vibration and oil drip and can spot a potential problem long before it gets bad.
The disadvantage is lack of cargo room, road noise and inability to take your 103 year old grandmother for a ride down to the local chinese food restaurant :( Other than that, it's cool.

WHY?

why not get something new and 4 cyl, drives nicer, better power, more comfort, better fuel economy

ive DD too many soft tops, and getting into a dry seat, without leaves or mud, can sometimes be quite inviting :(

I daily drive my 76 fj40 all the time and it's my only car!! I've only driven land cruisers since i got my liscence almost 4 years ago(only 19). Only thing that really sucks about it is gas milage, highway driving, and the windows on the hard top fogging up. Sometimes it feels like i'm driving in a cloud. Buy the new window seals from CCOT to get rid of window rattle and some new weather stripping for the doors and it can be relatively quiet. Anyone by any chance have a 75 - 77 wiper motor for trade for a 78 wiper motor?? The one on my 76 blows ass. I have to keep it on high just so the blades move.

The wiper motor on a 76' is the same as any from 75'-84' You just need to replace your with a decent one...email me, I have one kicking around off of a 79'

well i got my 78 fj40 as a daily driver and there ain't anything like it. ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER. i got the lift , the big tires , V8 and the dual flowmasters, and the rumbeling is so nice, especially when people in other cars roll there windows up cause the beautiful noise. where i live, every one has their new mercedes, beamers, lexus's and sh!t like that so they just stare  when i drive past em in a brite black,n,yellow beast. i love these fj's as a daily driver no matter if they got a V8 or a four banger and if you love it , who gives a damn about the gas price, ..... Cause your havin fun and ya only live once.

:D cheers:D

We we were short on vehicles I made my WIFE drive mine since her commute was only about 4 miles. The kicker is she is a elementary school teacher :D

I can see her know pullin in with the FJ, 35 tires, hardtop, V8 dual side exhuast......those kids thought she was the sh*****t.

The only problem is I live in the midwest and you can hear it start rusting soon as you drive it in the winter :(

It's never wrong to drive your cruiser, unless it's got an S10 frame.

See http://www.4x4labs.com/rigs/sand_spider/index.html for more details. Exactly what this is, a FJ55 on a S-10 and I don't see anyone compaining. I'm not sticking up for streetroddedcruiser but to each and to his own :flipoff2:

Luke's "Toylet Landburban" is on a full-size Blazer frame. I think the S10 is the little Blazer, right?

I drove my FJ55 daily for almost four years. Was fine, even after I made all kinds of mods. Brought my first kid home from the hospital when he was one day old in it. Dropped my kids of at school with it the day after coming up Cadillac, after Rubithon, two or three times.

But I'm not a comfort-craving cat. My favorite car (not truck) ever was my ratty '71 BMW 2002.

The 55 was actually great for moving little kids around, because the rumble of the 2F always put them to sleep. :)

I've been driving a 40 daily for 2 years now. I dont think I'll ever want another car. The feeling of people that drive by and give thumbs up and offer to buy is just too good to pass up. But just two days ago, my truck went into the shop where I will be doing the entire buildup. It's official now, the teardown starts in a month. I can't wait. If anyone in the bay area has a 700r4 they're looking to get rid of, let me know. Thanks! Oh yeah, also a holley projection kit.
