: Dana 60 spline vs. axle length q's (yes I searched)
sfazr2 12-21-2002, 07:50 PM Ok I went and pulled a dana 60 FF from the local Pick n Pull. But I didn't do enough homework. My dumb ass got low count (17 or 19 spline, something like that?) axles. I pulled it out of a late 70's/early 80's ford van.
Ok AND I need another carrier because of the higher gears I'm going to.
so.......
Do many of the D60's have the same axle shaft lengths? And what vehicles do i look for, for higher spline counts?
Or am I just SOL and going to have to buy a whole 'nother axle?
p.s. When I tried searching dan AND *60*, the search just timed out.
suspect 12-22-2002, 12:31 AM I searched under dana 60....I found over 2500 threads...

"dan" ... sheesh!
Good job searching Newbie ...
Maybe ya should go to JU and seach for "joe" :flipoff2:
dgcooper 12-22-2002, 04:03 AM Ok, I could be wrong but Ive never seen a 60 past 73 with a 16 spl axle.
If your looking just to replace the shafts for the housing you have, try searching the BOM# or checking an XGI to find a year and model that match up. Just rember that even if you find the right length, you also need to make sure it's the right bolt pattern too.
BillaVista 12-22-2002, 04:56 AM Hmmmmm. Early 80's Ford van and 19 spline I'm betting = Dana 70???

I'd be willing to bet that you could find some shafts that would work in your new carrier. (Maybe even some 35-spline ones.) Probably be a bitch to find them used in a yard though. You would have to pull a LOT of shafts. If I was at my other house I could look up the exact Dana part numbers for you, but I'm not. I will be back there on the 7th. If you can wait that long, remind me and I will do it if you give me either your BoM# or the exact length of your shafts. I suspect someone else may be able to help you out before then though.

Did you find anything for me?:flipoff2:
Hmmmmm. Early 80's Ford van and 19 spline I'm betting = Dana 70???
now that you mention it, there is a "72" stamped on the ring of the gears withing that big part #
CRAP! Ok if it is a 70, what kind of options do i have in gears, lockers, etc? I 'm going to research that anyhow.
Thanks for the help. Greg
GearMan 12-22-2002, 09:29 AM measure how long they are and look in the dana XGI manual and it will list all the dimensions and spline counts it couldnt be any easier

Ok, First it's 16 splines.
Second, return the whole axle and get another. The time you waste is your own.
Third, it was not a late 70's - 80's Van. Ford stopped using 16 spline in 1975. (unless it was a swapped in axle)
forth, Get the BOM and then well talk axle shaft lenghts (hint search on my user name and BOM)

The 70 used 23 spline, last year in a Ford was 1975

Good luck! Other than C-clips, name me one FF 60 that had 35 splines.
Other than a Chevy G300 van with 146 or 125 wheel base

Well, since he was going to change his carrier anyway, I figured he could just change to a 35-spline d60 carrier and I could look him up some d70/d80 shafts in my books that had similar lengths to his current shafts. Am I missing something?

I read your advice as he should pull a set of Dana 60 FF axle shaft's with 35 spline for his axle. Opps
Edit ->As far as I know there is only one Dana 60 FF axle with 35 spline, the Chevy G300.

More like 73-78. In 79 they switched to a different axle shaft (41100-1) that was used until 91.5, I haven't serached on that axle shaft, yet.
reddwarf 12-22-2002, 09:42 PM Any info about the van Dana 60 vs the Van 14 bolt? I.E. why/what vans did they use the 60?
sfazr2 12-22-2002, 09:50 PM I think I"m just going to return the whole axle...or sell it for um...free and get another. I mean by the time i go buy a new set of axles from pick n pull, i'm not far behind buying the whole axle.
You know the hardest part isn't the money, it's the hassle of pulling another one. Fucking mudded/rusted u bolts, and those axle are fucking heavy....dammit!. And it's crappy weather now too! Plus I have to get rid of the old one.

That's the only 35-spline FF d60 rear that I know of, too. And the dif is pretty offset, so it's pretty useless to us.
