My rig has a leaking front caliper. I'm kind of shocked what they want for a new one. Rebuild seal kits are very common from what I'm seeing. I haven't rebuilt a caliper since high school auto shop. Any tips? :D

all i know is that my dad can do it, and if he can do it so can you:D

ok sorry for yelling. if you can get the piston kit, great. But the problem is that they never seem to seal right. If I remember correctly the factory recommends replacement. I rebuilt one of mine, and it only lasted about 6 months.

Besides, they are not that expensive, doing one will not hurt if you have properly lubed the slides on the other side and replaced the pads at the same time.

225.00 is expensive to me! A-1 Cardone is working on a rebuild program, but not until mid march. There list price on a rebuilt disco caliper with a 2 year warranty is 46.00! :D

I've done at least a dozen calipers and none of them leak at all.

Splitting them hasn't been a problem for me at all. In fact, we've done a lot of significant modifications on the calipers and with all of the messing around you'd think we might have screwed at least one of them up.

No problems, no leaks, no nothing. Just good strong brakes (thank heavens).

So strong that they'll rip the caliper bolts right out of the axle housing! (don't ask....)

No, I didn't mean to insinuate that he might not be capable of doing it. Trust me, if I can do it, a trained (or even not-so-trained) monkey could do it.

I just used the seal kit. No new pistons on any of the calipers I've re-done. I'm not saying *you* won't need them, but I've been lucky and none of the calipers I've owned have been in much salt. Could be different depending on climate.

The trickiest part, IMO, is getting the piston out. The way we did it was to get a claw hammer, stick the claw end in there, angle it up and slightly twist/turn while lifting out the piston. You can't damage the inside bore of the piston by using the claw hammer(where most if not all of the corrosion will be).

Didn't hone out the cylinder walls either. Just wiped them down clean and sprayed them with brake cleaner. Installed the new seals and the outer retaining ring (you should use a large-ish socket and tap it in flush). That's the second trickiest part.

The instructions clearly show which seal is to be used where, but you need to pay attention as the seals look similiar if they're wet or if it's not really well lit.

Good luck, it's simple.

I have done a few as well, and what I have found is that calipers from corrosive areas don't like to go back together well. Just the halves seem to leak. I NEVER hone the cylinders, MAYBE a mild (non scoring) pad and brake clean.

The only one that ever leaked was my own, not a customers (that I know of) and it leaked after 6 months.

I split them to make reassembly easier but you don't really have to.

I've done my share of LR and Toy calipers. You can do one in 4min? Heck, it takes me more than that to fit just that stupid metal dust seal retainer, what a stupid design:shaking:.

More than ones I had no luck with compressed air. Or with the caliper still on the vehicle with engine running and pads removed, there was still one that didn't budge.
Ended up welding a big steel rod to that piston to encourage it to come out, which it did!
None of the calipers I've done ever leaked afterwards or had any other problem. I only ever split some disco calipers, after that never done it again. Makes blowing them out with compressed air possible, otherwise it doesn't work.

When doing LR calipers I would recommend using genuine seal kits and stainless pistons. Available from paddockspares.com for cheap.

This is an eight year old thread boys.

New calipers are barely more than $100.

Around here, the pistons are all so badly rusted they need to be replaced, thus adding more expense to the project.

I'll stick with new for something as safety critical as brakes.
