: AutoTrader paypal scam

Figured I'd post this up in case someone hasn't seen this one yet. The original email was a legitimate AutoTrader generated response. Im new to PayPal so I can see how someone could get caught by this. From what Ive read, the scammer will either ask for account details(obvious) or will send the cash and have a "courier" pick the vehicle up then file a dispute with Paypal claiming the goods were not delivered or they over paid. Unless you have a legitimate shipping invoice you're screwed.

Asking price is $5500 but I'll entertain any offer you may have. I can email pics of the exterior to you if you would like, and I can go and take some of the interior as well but it may be a couple days.

Thanks for your interest,
Mike

Unfortunately, I am unable to use/create PayPal and/or any other form of electronic payment. I am also unable to cash cheques/money orders of any kind as I live in a location without a regular bank. Being that you work off shore I think you can be sympathetic to this. However, if you are interested, please arrange with your courier company to send an agent to meet me in person, with cash.
Thanks

If there is anyone on this planet left that hasn't heard of this scam, send them my way I have a bridge to sell them.

That same scam has been going on since before I was born, its just done by different means now.

I hadn't because like I said I JUST started using paypal but then I don't feel the need to buy and sell useless shit all day long. And why the fuck would I waste any of my time searching out scams if I dont use it? So wheres this bridge? Can I use paypal for it?

You should learn how to read before you go off on a rant about paypal and searching for scams dipshit.

This is NOT a new type of scam specific to PAYPAL! It has been going on for as long as people have used money. I stated they have just changed the means of getting your money by using paypal for the last 10 years.

When everyone used cheques this scam was used, just in a different way. Western Union and postal money orders are other forms scammers used in the past, and somewhat still do because people like you have never heard of it before.

Why should you waste any of your time searching out scams? Probably so you don't get taken by a scammer while dealing with internet sales.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if I was such a genius like you though, and keep posting about these new to the interwebs scoundrels! You should have just called the local news and had them rush over a van so you could break the news live on tv.

Don't worry, that bridge will still be available when you come up with the money, and sure I accept paypal.

One post that I copied/pasted emails to is making a big deal?

I didn't "rant" about paypal, and I believe this explains why I did it

Figured I'd post this up in case someone hasn't seen this one yet.

See, instead of wasting my time posting pointless comments I posted something that may actually be useful to people who, like me, hadn't heard of this particular scam. I realize you're some sort of interweb master who's obviously seen and heard absolutely everything related to scams, so sorry to have wasted your precious time.

And had YOU read, it's pretty clear that when I got the email about paypal I DID read. Like I said, dipshit, I dont search out every scam there is. But when someone wants to pay me in a way Ive never been paid I certainly do. I figured the fact they were sending an actual courier that could be verified made it sound a bit more legit than sending something thru the mail to a PO. And because of ebay it seems, from what I read, people expect paypal to be safe.

Keep up the good work contributing nothing useful tho and I'll keep trying to actually be helpful.

Your so stupid you make my head hurt. I wasn't referencing your original post to be re-read, I was talking about re-reading my response to it.

At no point in my original response did I make any indication that you were stupid, or anything close to it for posting, but I retract that thought.

You are the type who goes on the offensive the second you think someone is trying to make you look dumb or disagrees. I have dealt with your kind before, and there is no winning. You are the type that if we were standing next to each other in person, you would continually get louder and louder until I walked away. Then you would tell everyone how you outsmarted me.

You also shouldn't try and reply when your pissy. It will save you from coming back five times and continually editing your posts.

Actually I did just re-read, and I agree I took your second post out of context. It seemed to say I was stupid because I hadn't seen it, and realized I didn't mention in the first post that I hadn't seen it myself.

The only reason I did post in the first place is that it was the first time I've seen it. My bad.

I came across the exact same situation while trying to sell a vehicle and I caught it right away. I emailed back saying "send your PayPal money order to a friend or courier person at home and get them to bring me the cash" and didn't you know I never heard back!

I was also called by a company in the states that said that they saw my truck online and said how nice it was and how it looked like it was in great shape and they wanted to help me sell it. All I had to do was give them $500 and they would sell the vehicle for $500 over my cost and I get all the money back. They make their profit off of lending money to the buyer. Sounds good right!? Except for when I asked him what colour my truck was he couldn't answer my question!!! Ding ding ding.....SCAM!!!
