I have a 1987 fj60 that gets about 8-9 mpg. I have a friend that owns a shop around town and he offered to do carbon cleaning, and told me that it may help to increase my mpg and overall performance. He is giving me a pretty good deal on it, but I have heard some negative things about this. Has anyone ever had this done to their cruisers? good? bad?
thanks
How do they do it without pulling the head?
New to me.......

From what I remember I think that they bypass the fuel lines to run the product through the carb and let everything soak in. The owner of the shop said that he has had some good results by doing it.
I had a concern about the amount of pressure that was going to be put on the motor, blown gaskets, etc, but he said that it was safe.
thanks

I did it to my Tahoe. It had about 68k on it. It did help. I gained about 2 mpg. I got a good deal. I paid for the soap stuff. I think it was $40 or so. For mine we still had to clean the intake tube and the mass air flow sensor. I think cleaning the mass air flow sensor did more than anything. It did appear that a lot of gunk was getting burned off while it was running on the Motorvac. I'd probably do it again.

How much does it cost? I was thinking of having it done to my dually.

He told me that he would do the comlete carbon cleaning, timing, and a volt test all for 130 smackers. I think that this is a good deal. I have seen some cleanings prices a little lower than 130 and all the way to 185 or so.
thanks for the input

Normal Price here is $125 but he might be a little low. Small town = lower overhead. He usually replaces the fuel filter at the same time too. He gets a few bucks for doing that. That machine is really pretty neat. It takes about an hour for the full thing to get done.
