: Herculiner compatibiltiy??
cj8scrambld 01-02-2003, 09:30 AM hello all, I have LineX on the inside of my CJ8 tub and over time and some changes and modifications I am wanting to "recoat" some areas, I will recoat the entire inside to be uniform. My question is does anyone know for sure if the Herc will adhere to the LineX? The companies that make these products either don't know or they do not want to say one way or another....? They just suggest "scrubbing" the LineX surface with Xylene before applying the Herc. I know the Xylene is part of the surface prep of the Herc anyway. Can anyone tell me for sure if these two products will adhere to one another, has anyone done this? Thanks in advance for any assistance. John
florida4x4 01-02-2003, 09:32 AM I dont know fer sure but if both coatings use xylene for thinners then i would guess they are compat. try a small area first to see.
cj8scrambld 01-02-2003, 09:37 AM Fla4x4, I am thinking the same as I believe they are both polyurethane based....I am not 100% on that though...(?). I am thinming of trying a small area 1st. Thanks.

So how in the hell (Or was that "Why in the hell") did you "Prepare" your Hootus?

wseld 01-02-2003, 11:08 AM John, I would guess that they would work together, but like you I'm not 100%. I do know that the Herc works very well, that it what I have on the inside of my tub. :)
cj8scrambld 01-02-2003, 11:27 AM LineX says no....I kind of thought they would so I would have them recoat it....HaHaHa! I called Herc and they were unsure....I would have thought they would know if anyone...??? Anyho', I think I am just going to spot check it and if it does, great! If not then I am sure I can find a use for it....yeah, many uses for it. I know this shiiit is great and has almost invaluable uses on a woods toy for protecting from the elements! John

BJ On Roids 01-02-2003, 03:27 PM i mentioned this the other week and nobody got my joke
at least some people out there, remember that thing from the ranger forums, a few years back, or whenever :flipoff2:
TexasBlake 01-02-2003, 03:30 PM Herculiner will adhere to just about anything.
However, I wouldn't go over LineX with Herculiner. Herculiner is not near the same quality is LineX. Herculiner also fades into a smokey color.
Josh 89XJ 01-02-2003, 03:34 PM A friend of mine worked at Rhino Linings and they routinely just sprayed over LineX beds. The local LineX place did a lot of really crappy spray jobs so it was routine for Rhino to redo them. I would think that the Herc would work just as well over the LineX

It's from the Explorer forum. For your reading pleasure: How Do I Get Herculiner Off of My Hootus?! (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18595)
cj8scrambld 01-02-2003, 04:48 PM Thanks for the info. My LineX has also faded to a dark smokey gray. Any other DIY brands like Durabak, that may be a better choice than the Herc? I am still not opposed to trying the Herc. I want to recoat the LineX and I am thinking of doing the cage...although I don't want the coated cage to act like barbed wire and tear up someone's hands...hahaha. Thanks. John
I have had to go over a few areas of the herculier with more, even when it was stained with oil, tranny fluid, etc. I am willing to be it would work. I did "prep" work in the lightest sense of the word and the Herculiner is stuck very well. Try a spot under a seat and try taking it off with a screwdriver or other shap impliment. But i think it'll work.
The Joker 01-02-2003, 04:52 PM I am going to say NO they wont stick together.
I use to work in auto body and when you spray on the (insert liner here) they recommend you sand with 40 grit usually. That way you have good adhesion. Almost all liners finish with a shiny smooth (the texture doesnt count) finish. Unless you can sand what you have on now with 40 grit to get a rough surface to stick to I dont think it will work. If that will even scratch it.
The only other way it will possible work is like a clear coat does, it would have to melt together. For this I would think what ever you have on now would have to be fresh as in you ran out of brand "X" and had to finish with brand "Y".
When I use to spray on the liners occasionally the paper/plastic would blow back so we would have to clean the liner off windows/mirrors. That was a pain when it was fresh so I would imagine trying to use lacquer thinner or some other product to try and melt what you have on now to get the other to stick to it would be futile.
It would be interesting to see if what you have on now will allow the other to stick at all or if it just falls off over time from lack of adhesion.
