: Dana 300 problem?
DamnJeep 01-02-2003, 03:56 PM I recently finished working on my YJ and finally had a chance to wheel it. I put a dana 300 into it and since I am not familiar with this t-case I wasn't sure how it would work. After I got off the trail I had a hell of a time getting the thing to shift out of low! Is this just the normal way a 300 shifts or is it a sign that the case is gonna crap out on me?
Not that I think it matters but I built a clocking ring and have rotated the case nearly flat.
Thanks for any info.
Maine Jeepah 01-02-2003, 04:20 PM The way mine went was just like yours when I first bought the heep...the more it was used the easier it got. (probably was rarely shifted)
Might need to pop it in and out of 1st and reverse while pulling the shifters to get it out of the bind. (thats what I do)
Avoid driving on hard surfaces in 4wd it will bind bad.
Twin stick will also solve this problem.

mines the same way I have been unlocking the hubs backing up some then it shifts real easy.
landusepbb 01-02-2003, 04:43 PM Typical D300 behavior, especially if you've been wheeling on slickrock with lockers. What I do when mine binds up like that is unlock the front hubs, it usually frees things up to be able to shift it. I have a Tera Low 4:1 and it behaves exactly the same as the stock case did.
DamnJeep 01-02-2003, 04:53 PM Thanks for the speedy response guys. I am planing on a twin stick in the near future and am glad to hear it will help with this problem.
Charly 01-02-2003, 07:16 PM I only had that problem once and that was when I was at the Rockathon (Bill and Chad's Excellent Adventure) over there where you are....
Maybe it's just Nova Scotia :flipoff2:
Some nasty bees ya got there too :D
The Rockslut 01-02-2003, 08:18 PM I have the 4:1's and twin stick on mine. Shifts stubbornly sometimes but i noticed that if you have the bolts on the twin stick too tight it wont shift for crap. They need to be loose enough to spin by hand (nylock nuts keep everything from falling apart).
Keith 01-02-2003, 09:14 PM 4:1 in mine too, shifts in like butter, and not much worse coming out. I just keep it in 1st, roll a bit and get the tires straight, and yank it out.
Capt. Nemo 01-02-2003, 10:04 PM My t-case is the same way (d-20). From what I understand, the differences in tire daimeters between the front and rear (no matter how slight), and the tire rotation in turns will cause binding in the t-case. As mentioned above, reversing and then shifting out of low usually helps, or if that doesn't work actually spinning all four tires in reverse on some slick terrain will free the gears up so that you're able to shift out of low.

DamnJeep 01-03-2003, 01:06 PM Yeah Charly. I tried to get my jeep ready for Bill and Chad's rockathon but ended up helping Chad out more than working on my crap. Seemslike whenever I have to work on his rig its always "I need this done soon cause I'm going out this weekend!" We end up cutting too many corners to "get the job done". You think you have "death trap fabrication"!!! He even bent my old wrap bar during that weekend! Oh well. Next time.
I did wait at cripple creek for everyone but you guys never got of the first part of the trail until that afternoon. I heard about the "bee" incident!
When I do the twin stick I hope it DOES cure the problem. Then again. I only paid 40 bucks for a couple of D300s. I can always try the spare...
Maine Jeepah 01-03-2003, 01:38 PM don't worry the more ya use it, and once you figure the easy way to un-bind it, you'll be all set.
I still remember feeling like I was gonna bend the shifter on mine when I first used it.
Not an issue now.

Rokcrler 01-03-2003, 08:14 PM Mine binds also but what bugs me the most is that front twinstick shifts pretty good but when trying to get the rear out of low shifting thru neutral to high the SOB grinds like a mofo... Im running a TF727 and either force it thru the grind to high or simply shut off the Jeep and then it will shift with no grind... could this be an auto tranny thing?
I,ve had my 85 CJ7 for about 7 years now.Sometimes the TC shifts easy, sometimes its a bitch! I just deal with it.
JeepinIan 01-05-2003, 06:28 PM I had an 85 CJ7 w/ a 360/TH400/D300. I had to shut it down to get out of low rande
TIPSYCJ 01-05-2003, 10:14 PM I have had my 300 for a few years now , and i also agree
that backing up a few feet solves the shifting problem.
