I've read what kind of bikes you guys ride and I hear some of the locals mention some fun trails but my question is do any of you actually ride?fun or fitness?weekly miles? Downhill runs don't count in my book because you don't really have to be fit .I have slacked for the last year but i'm finally getting back into it and I'm up to 150 weekly miles but my goal is 250-300 miles a week, keep in mind that this are mostly road miles but i try and do at least one off road ride a week of about 30-40 miles

Counting miles are for roadies

Downhill counts if you ride to the top.

don't have to be in good shape to downhill? you have to be in damn good shape to ride downhill... it's all or none for the full run. you don't get a rest you just hammer till it's over. 8 gears as opposed to 27? 50-60# bikes compared to 20# bikes... only people that have never riden dh say this. it's a myth. it's not easy keeping the pigs up to speed for the full run. i think your thinking of "freeriders" now those are some out of shape pigs. imho downhill is much more demanding than crosscountry and the freeriding. also if they're isn't a chair lift your riding or pushing that beast to the top... for each and every 6 minute run.

Yea I ride. At least 10 off road miles each time I go out. It used to be 3 times a week. But work schedule fawked that all up.

I know Iknow only 10 miles?
When you ride where I ride. youll understand. Our MT bike trails are some of the best singletrack in the USA. And I can back that up with BIKE mag. They said so not me. So if you think you can hang. BRING IT AWWN. We have about 30 miles of singletrack in our local small park. Our trails wind around/up/down/over/under (tunnel) creeks/streams/roads. You name it we got it.
Storm damage is always fun too.
Trees fall down and you have to hammer over them cranks leave cool marks in fresh down trees.

Do you have any real hills? From what i've seen east coasters can't climb worth shit Its one of those things :east has nice single track and the west has the long brutal climbs
For example, most europians pros including Lance Armstrong did'nt fininsh the San Francisco Grand Prix because they could'nt handle the hills even with a litle EPO help

i got about 30 miles worth of killer single trac just up the street from my house. kicks ass to live a 1/2 mile from annadel state park... no ski lifts though... that would be a definate upgrade for the place.

Yep, I have to agree our hill climbs are straight up and down and usually only momentum can get you up. dont forget we dont have any traction like you do. Its all mud here. But I think our longest climb measured out to be 1 1/2 miles.

Good one. You got me.

No, Really, our trails rule. There are no rocks. All mud/trees/and hills.
for the most part there is not much traction. And good friends of mine went ot moab to check out the rocks there and they said that the traction was unreal. They had absolutely no problem climbing angles that we could only dream about back here.

They said that after the first day, they were bored.
Most of our tree crossings are 2 feet off the ground and we have to build ramps out of other down trees to get over them.
One thing we have is the abilty to crest objects. I think thats my favorite part.

And as for the fun factor. Thats the only reason I ride. Keeping in shape is just a fringe benifit.

RIDE ON!

I'm lucky enough to live in an area with lots of good single track trails. Within 5 miles of my house is the network of trails at Whiskeytown Lake (Natl Rec Area in Shasta County). Plenty of good climbs and steep decents.

I don't know how many miles I ride each week, but I try to get out a few times a week. I also weight train, run, and train in martial arts. The martial arts probably is the biggest reason for not riding as much as I used to, since I found cycling was building muscle that was hindering high kicking flexibility. Hence my new found interest in running.
