Short answer for your Chero: No more than 2" or just go to a "lift friendly" inspection shop.

I will look it up..but I believe it is track width X wheelbase / 2200 = total lift allowed. Not 100% but I will look and get back to you.

im an ma inspector, and i dont even know... there is that supid equation, but who is going to actually use it? im too lazy to. the 2" thing is for 2wd. Their is a limited # of vehicles that are listed that have the max height from ground to bottom of door. But it doesnt cover a lot of vehicles.

Jware, that eqaution is in my post above...I am not 100% on it but I am looking for it. I am like 99% sure that is the eqaution. But for some odd reason I think if it allows say 3" lift height, that u can do a 3" body and mechanical lift...that is the part I am looking for....?? John

gonechevy, i just found this in the MA general laws book, although I am still looking for that eqaution because I know it does exist. But here is what I found so far: Chapter 90: Section 7P. Height of motor vehicles; alteration restricted.

Section 7P. No person shall alter, modify or change the height of a motor vehicle with an original manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of up to and including ten thousand pounds, by elevating or lowering the chassis or body by more than two inches above or below the original manufacturer's specified height by use of so-called ""shackle lift kits'' for leaf springs or by use of lift kits for coil springs, tires, or any other means or device.

The registrar shall establish rules and regulations for such changes in the height of motor vehicles beyond said two inches. No motor vehicle that has been so altered, modified or changed beyond the provisions of this section or the rules and regulations established by the registrar shall be operated on any way.

this is just an idea what if you bought it that way, even if you didnt

say when you goto register it have the lift and tires on it ans say it was bought that way would that be of any help?

that would only work if you had jsut bought it and hadnt had the vehicle registered in your name I guess :)

It would not make any difference to the registry, it would come up when you take it to the inspection station, which in MA is not state operated as in some states. It would be up to the specific station to reject said vehicle, if they let it slide then some police officer may cite you for the infraction. I don't believe any recourse will be taken on the station that inspected it, cause you could always roll through the inspection with the shortest tires you can find to get the height down and then go home and throw on the 38"+ swampers. I am still looking for that formula they use....track widthXwheelbase/2200=lift allowed. I know it does exist!! And you could always widen the track for more height...I think they want stability?? Uhhhggg!!

From here: http://www.customtruckshowcase.com/laws/Massachusetts.html

(12) Altered Vehicle Heights.

The original manufacturers specified height of motor vehicles with an original manufacturers gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less shall not be altered by elevating or lowering the chassis or body by more than two inches, except that 4-wheel drive motor vehicles with a original manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less may be altered in accordance with the provisions of 540 CMR 6.00.[That fucking equation]
The Registrar may periodically provide approved altered vehicle height specifications for said 4-wheel drive vehicles. Any motor vehicle altered, modified, or changed beyond the afore-mentioned two inches, or the Registrar's approved altered height specifications, shall be rejected.

For more information, go to Massachusettes Registry of Motor Vehicles Web site. http://www.state.ma.us/rmv/index.htm

Get your calculator: The maximum allowable mechanical lift (as well as what's acceptable in terms of bigger rubber) can be determined by this formula:

Maximum Lift = Wheelbase x Wheel Track divided by 2200

For example, if you did the formula and came up with 2 inches, then a 2 inch lift and a 2 inch increase in tire size is allowable, equaling a total lift of 4 inches over stock.
