: worst spill?
Joshua J. Allan 10-10-2001, 05:52 PM aight let's see what your worst spill has ever been.
i was on the browns ravine trail around folsom lake after there was a really bad storm. was bombing a downhill section, took a turn and my front tire ended up meeting a fallen tree at about 20 mph. endoed (sp) over the bars, and landed face first in about 6 inches of mud.
Monkeyboy 10-10-2001, 06:11 PM MountainBike crash
Front tire got pinched between two rocks at the top of a 6ft drop during a race.OUCH highspeed endo over a dropp off isn't fun.
Bombing down MT diablo 35mph on the road pulled off onto the gravel to catch the trailhead. tires came out from under me and sent me sliding over the embankment into the manzaneta.
Worst road bike crashes.
two wheel drifted into a reflector in the road going 50mph down monitor pass on the death ridewalked away with a little road rash and finished the 120 mile ride
Small Criterium race in concord ended up in a 9 bike pile up in one of the turns.
Road rash everywhere right leg through some ones front wheel. caught a cleat in theback of my neck.
The theres all the parked cars I've hit on cold mornings
Leonel 10-10-2001, 08:09 PM I went over the bars on my road bike coming back down from Mt.Tam at 35-40 mph, cracked my helmet in half ,i don't know if I was lucky or not because I did'nt brake any bones but I had a really bad case of roadrush on my legs, arms and forehead ,it was a very painfull six weeks
YellowSub1962 10-10-2001, 10:23 PM haven't really crashed too hard on my mountain bike yet (leaving my options open )...Though I did go over the bars and into the back of a buddy's jeep going down Big Sluice in August
BMX crashes...thats another story...
Haole 10-11-2001, 06:27 AM None of my worst actually occured on the trail. I was on the way to work and had been slacking off on cleaning and lubricating my chain. I was in the left turn lane and was trying to make a light. I started cranking hard (standing up) and the pedal "jumped". The bike went left and I went right. I body surfed acrossed the entire left turn lane. I threw out my back and attempted to removed all the skin on my arm.
Of course being in the military. I had to go to work to get treatment. (It was a duty day.) I got sent home to recoup for 24 hours.

fc187 10-11-2001, 09:43 PM I have lucked out in the sence that my worst crash didnt result is broken bones or loss of life.
we where riding the porcipine train in Moab. I began the long decent down, back to green river. there was a portion of the trail that was right on the edge of a canyons clif (easy 500foot drop) I was all pumped chasing my buddy, like a good 25-30mph through some narow, dirty, rocky sheet, and then all of a sudden,...POW!,.. I smack the ground and am just skiding down the trail in a cloud of dust, happy the whole time that I was still on the ground and not fying off the cliff.
I couldnt even tell ya what I did or what made me fall, it just happened, ya know.
then there is that time I lost it on 3rd divide in downieville(before they made it a highway) but thats another story
JasonH 10-12-2001, 01:34 PM Greenbelt trail in Austin Texas. You ride in about 7 miles, then turn around and ride the same trail back out. At the end of the trail, I bomb down a hill and hit a root that is sticking out of the ground. I go over the bars and get tangled in the bike. A little rash and a deep thigh bruise for injuries. The worst part was I had to ride back the 7 miles to the car with a bent front wheel and a fork bent so bad I could only turn right!
Had a nasty road bike spill in high school too.
MellowYellow 10-12-2001, 03:02 PM My worst was on the Lake Tahoe bike trail, 4th of July, 1995. I had just graduated from college. My friends and I were riding into Tahoe City for lunch. I was in a goofy mood and I saw a little brick wall. I thought I could do a little wheel-drop off that. Well the approach was downhill, I was in the big chain ring, I had clip-less pedals, and...tennis shoes. When I went to crank for the wheelie, the front wheel dropped so fast I didn’t have time to finish saying “oh sh”. Waaap.
I was lying in the bike path with a very sore shoulder and my friend asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital. I said, “does it look broken?” All four people just shook their heads. The next question, “do want and ambulance?”—“I don’t have insurance.”—“I’ll get the truck.” Then a lady rides by and yells at me, “do you have to lay right in the middle of the path!” Such compassion.
While I was waiting for the truck they moved me to that wall to lay down. I started to loose the feeling in my legs. I got all panicky. I had hit my head and I didn’t have my helmet on. My friend lifted my legs and helped me lay flat again...I had just cut the blood off. What a dork.
On the ride to the medical center, my friend tells me that it can’t be broken, because I’m not in enough pain. Sure...
While I was in the examining room I started to go into shock. Turned out to be a 2-3 degree separation and a fracture.
I still hit the fireworks that night. Vicadin and Tahoe fire works. Quite a show!

close to it but I was bombin down an open field with some 5-6' drop offs havin a blast and somehow came across the ONLY tree stump in the field and over the bars and about 20' I went. I tucked my arms in knowing they'd brake if they were out and sure enough I landed on my shoulded and busted my arm about 2" from the joint. It healed funky no I can't put my left arm up like I can my right since it is actually allready up (healed funky like that).
crawlin cruiser 10-12-2001, 05:51 PM I was on a trail called "gearjammer" on the northshore here in BC. Just as we finished our climb we got to the trail head and not even 10ft I bailed off the first obsticle and broke my arm. I sucked.... and still hurts 2 years later.

ianbike 10-12-2001, 06:41 PM Lets ee here, Riding down diablo on road, crashed at about 40. Had a nice road rash.
Riding up on a tight singletrack, hit a turn way to fast, tires lost grip and then my face flew into a huge branch, then my head slid into the trunk pretty hard. Just remember yelling. Woke up on the ground, and walked for about 5 minutes when a buddy found me, said he was looking for me for about 20 minutes. On top of being knocked out, I had a concussion, and a broken nose.
Riding a steep section of rocks, grabbed too much front brake, flew over and into more rocks.
Tons of crashes doing stupid things, last weekend someone came around a corner too fast and slammed on his front brake, endoed into me.
freeriding, kid in front of me stopped hella fast and slid his rear tire in my path, off I went.
Oh, and I get poison oak really bad, I brush my leg on it, and a few days later my whole leg is covered in blistery seeping rashes, same with arms, got poison oak on my balls once, now that hurt.

Joshua J. Allan 10-13-2001, 05:33 PM i just saw an old friend for the first time in like 8 months i think it is. he was riding up at rainbow bridge i think (the bridge up on folsom lake up the fork of the river) anyways. he said he was riding there, and was about 20 min into the ride, and ended up falling and he got a compound fracture in his left leg. said the bone was sticking out of the skin. the doctors had to put a steel plate in his leg. he just got it removed friday, one year to when he had it put in.
Rocky Road 10-21-2001, 07:42 AM Was on a steep switchback and miscaculated my speed. Went over the handlebars. The Log I 'chose' to land on had a broken off branch prutruding from it. The pointy end of that jammed into my leg like a spear and then ripped out sideways and I kept going.
It only went in about an inch, but did some cool 'blowout' damage. Still have the scar today. They couldn't really stich it due to the ragged torn edges of my skin, so I still bear the wild looking scar just above my kneee to this day.
Kyron 10-21-2001, 06:29 PM There's so many good/bad ones I just wouldn't know where to start.....
At Northstar on a downhill going over 40 through some S-turns with a bunch of friends I drifted wide into some bushes... tacoed my front rim and I should have gotten 8 stiches at least on my eye brow, but I had Lidocane and a spare rim in the truck and I didnt even miss the chair lift with the group
At Skaggspnt coming out of the parking lot going down Skyline spun out in the big ring and my LX free hub froze and turned it in to a track bike. I went over the bars in front of an oncoming car... I landed got the wind knocked out of me and see this car skiding sidways at me..... as I roll on to the side of the road I'm picturing my daughter (who was 4 months old)in my head thinking WTF just happened........
Still theres way more...
Looks as if I got you all BEAT!
While riding home from our local park. (which is listed in BIKE mag. as one of the best trails in the USA!)
I got to a flight of steps at the local college. My buddie says dont ride down the steps its dangerous.
so I dont.
I ride down next to the steps and at the bottom covered in very high grass is a ditch. I endo and shatter my hand. It took 2 days in the hospital and 3 pins in my hand to get me back in shape.

Last lap of a 120 mile road race, final corner. It's at the bottom of a mile long hill and there's a 200m climb to the finish. I'm about 5 seconds off the front and just have to maintain speed up the hill to win.
I came around the corner at about 40 mph and stood up to sprint up the hill. As I did, my front wheel hit a small rock/pebble and I pulled my bars/front wheel out from under me. I went over the bars, landing on my head. Crushed the helmet, but no concussion. However... I managed to break a collarbone and 3 ribs and fractured a bone in my left wrist. Road rash everywhere. Didn't collect the $800 for winning the race, but I did get to go the hospital...again.
That was my worst.
Paul
ouch. you win. sortof.
orangezuk 10-30-2001, 10:05 AM It's not a MTB crash, but its pretty good...
Out riding street one sunday morning, and I see a gap that I had been sizing up for the last few rides. What it is - a bank over a stairway that goes to a basement, so the stairway goes into the street, and there is a 2 ft rail to clear on the other side. I figure not a big deal, the bank should boost me enough to clear it all, was I wrong. Everything but the rear wheel cleared, so I got pitched over the bars. 2 broken wrists, 4 broken fingers, lots of stitches, a concussion (I was wearing a helmet), dislocated shoulder and lots of roadrash...It wasn't fun. But I did go back 6 months later - after I was healthy - and clear it!
Don't get me started on dirtbike crashes....

dont get any of us started on Dirtbike crashes. I have busted soooo many bones I dont even want to count them all.

TexasYJ 11-05-2001, 01:42 PM Crimson is a great color selection for this one. I was Mountain Biking for the US Army MTB team and we wer on some familiar Single Track in South Korea, Well I was tucked and flying down this trail when I came around a corner and found a boulder the size a VW Bug sitting in the middle of our Single Track, (Mind you we were in this exact spot the day before) Well There was no stopping, er, um, actually that is exaclty what I did, I stopped, very suddenly, I doubt that rock even moved upon my 40 MPH impact, I blew my new carbon fiber Spinergy's, and both my shoulders were badly sprained, not to mention the most blood you have ever seen out of a persons face, and to make matters worse, a buddy of mine planted his helmet betwqeen my shoulder blades as he "discovered" the new trail modification.
VT_Toy 11-05-2001, 04:00 PM Last summer was probably my worst. I was riding at night with some friends on a local trail. I was going pretty fast, out front, when I went down a small hill and over a little bridge that crosses a swampy area. Out of nowhere - BAM! My bike STOPPED and I hit the bridge HARD. Luckily I got my left arm up in time to protect my face.
Turns out whoever built the bridge didn't trim all the vertical supports flush with the top, so I caught one with my pedal, stopping the bike.
After a few minutes of laying there not moving, I figured I was ok, though my shoulder was hurting. Rode a bit further, stopped for a bit to puff a bowl, then decided I should go home. Boy was I glad I had an auto tranny in my car then!
After a couple days when it didn't feel better I went to the doctor. After several visits and X-rays, they thought I had torn my rotator cuff along with my bruised ribs and major rash, and some DARK bruises. I finally got an MRI and they discovered I had fractured my greater tuberocity, the upper bone in the arm, right where the muscles attach. Not much they could do except tell me not to ride for a while.
It's still a little painful at certain angles :(
Del taco 11-06-2001, 10:53 AM Two nasties.
all eastern woodland singletrack.
out with some chums "stealing a ride" on some bridal trails ...we com bombing down a steep section and the bottom was all churned deep mud from teh horses...either way I was the only chump whose front tire got sucked by the mud...so over i went, I was okay but lost my fave riding glasses and broke a bar-end right off.
4 months later one of the guys was running htat trail again and just happened to look down and found my riding specs in the mud!
second one involved a section of trail that was part of my regular routine...ran this trail usually twice weekly..
it runs along a straem for a good bit and there is one tight section where a large tree had fallen and is leaning against another...it requires a head duck..
as with any familiar section you tend to run those much faster..and this day my concentration wasnt up for the challenge...
i was bombing it with my head elsewhere (problably on some girl)..and nexth thing i know there is a huge flash of light..and poof im flat on my back in the dirt.
my bike is a bout 25feet down trail.
I had cleanly planted the front of my helmet into the tree trunk.
the "bark impression" in the foam was a conversation piece, even though that helmet was retired that afternoon for a new one.
Bgcj5 11-08-2001, 10:06 AM I think my worst one was when I was riding down the street to a local trail. I was following closly behind a panal van when it stoped abrubtly at an intersection, Well my first though was to cut left and avoid rear ending it so I cut left out into the road directly into an on comming Ford Tauras SHO going 40 mph. I had just enogh time to see the car as he t-boned me. My left thigh hit the drivers side fender and the rest of me landed on the windshield and rolled over the car. When I came to I was still laying in the middle of the road with all sorts of peopel staring at me. I had a huge purple bruise on my thigh that extended form my waist to my knee, I had a huge cut on my chin because I decided that my chin should be the first thing to hit the pavement. I got up and dragged my bike off the road and took a look at the car. I had placed a HUGE dent in the fender above the wheel, I broke his windshield and my bike took out the drives side door. After 6 hours in the hospital they deemed nothing broken and said I should take it easy for a while. I have a couple of other too I'll post them later on today.
Sillyneck 11-08-2001, 08:24 PM I was @ northstar after the pro dh race a couple years ago and was on the pro course and ended up choosing a differnt route where my neck met a strip of that orange fencing and flipped me all the way over back onto my feet then straight to the dirt :D
It was weird..I was on a borrowed intense w/ disks and all kinds of crap but it was unable to swing the same line at the same speed as my fsr w/ zzyzx did on the previous run. My friend made the corner right before me on my bike too. Well let's just say my day was over and school started the next day which sucked.
Its not my best crash but its a good ending.
while cruising down a dusty dirt wooded trail in our park. I was 3rd in a long line. #2 brushes against a tree branch and it smaks me right in the face. I skid to a stop. And say Wait I just lost a contact lense.
My riding partner says" Is it blue?" I say Yes. He says its right there. Wash it off and back in my eye. good as new.
What are the odds of finding a hard contact lense in the woods when if got poped out of your eye at 20 mph?
Next story..... I am 3rd in line again. Steve is in front. And dave is in the middle. It should be noted that dave isn't that good a rider.
And that he is a black male. ( this may not seem important but it is.)
Steve is calling out the obsticals.... I hear the following, as steve then dave get to obsticals in the trail..
Stump......... then dave would say... Stump... Then I would say Stump...
Tree............. Tree.......... Tree......
Root..............root............root
Rock............rock............rock.........
Vine........AAAAHHHHHH......... I just saw the dark side of the moon!
When steve passed the vine. He pushed it with his shoulder causing it to swing. Then when dave rode up to it. His barend hooked on it and caused him to endo. When he endoed. His shorts came down and I got the biggest moon shot I ever wanted or didn't want. :D
Dave wasnt hurt. And ever since. Everytime we ride past a vine... Someone quotes me and says... "I just saw the dark side of the moon!" :D lol
Gumbo 11-11-2001, 11:10 PM Today! I was riding a local trail at Comite. We came across a section called Newton's Drop. It is more or less a vertical 7 ft. drop that shoots over a small stream with a narly climb on the other side.
All of us stop before to look down and pick the best line. It is extrememly rooty going down hill and sections have washed away. Another note is that the stream has two metal grates across them to prevent you from slipping in the mud. My buddies all go successfully. I am intimidated and finally do it...no problem!
It was the second go around that did it. There were some huckers there checking the XC guys out. I came down, but picked a slightly different line that shot me towards the water. I corrected myself and ended up catching my tire inbetween the metal grates. The bike goes down and my face and left side of my body are scraped across. ..not fun! My Knee is fubared, scrapes, and bruises, not to mention half of my body covered in mud! The only carnage to the bike was a bent brake lever...Avid Magnesiums...more $$$!
L8er!
Gumbo
yesterday a guy I ride with manualed off a curb...about 10 inches high. He got a little too far back, the bike flew out from underneath him. he landed squating on his feet, ( i have done it a million times). When he stood up he winced and said "ouch". Went to the hospital, he broke his ankle in three places.
dumb luck i guess.
Insayn 11-16-2001, 01:16 PM Hmmm...worse spill? I think all of mine are my worse spills.
Going down a seriers of cutbacks on the expert loop of Cedar Hill Park too fast, cut the bars right too far and hit an exposed tree root. I went over the handle bars with my feet still clipped in, did a flip in mid air with the bike still attached and landed on my right side. Once I commenced with my artful landing the bike went free and went about 15 ft down hill into a tree. I continued to roll and hit a tree breaking my helmet, separating my shoulder giving me some of nature's rashes, bumps and bruises. The bike suffered a taco'd front rim and a flat. I rubbed some dirt on it, picked up my bike and went crying home to my mommy.:rasta:
Tonka_sam 11-18-2001, 11:05 AM How about the time I came hauling ass down a this trail up in northern cali and hit a elk standing in the middle of the trail. ( actualy I missed him but had to beat feet he was in rut and I was busting his groove)
them this one time in band camp:eek:
Actualy my worst wreck I was crusing down this single track and the trail has this 1 foot water bar and 80 degree turn right after it hit the water bar jumped into the air and missed the corner droped about 15 feet into the berry bushes. Thank god for those bushes the next thing to catch me was a good 300 feet down and covered with water from the great pacific puddle.
Y fram trek 22 later chuck
