I think it would be fun to take a 2000 Ram 2500 regular cab, short box with V10, swap in an Allison automatic, swap the front D60 to a DynaTrac manual hub setup, 5.13's, ARB's, 6-8" quality lift, 44" Boggers, drop the bed for a flatty, build a snorkle and move all electronics to a waterproof/vented box on the flatbed. Hack the front fenders if needed to clear. Custom front hidden winch bumper (Reunel is too big) with a M12000 (the 15 has almost no rope).

The V10 has gobs of power and its stock, so no worries about reliability, its got FI for good running at angle, and its distributorless so water is not an issue.

A built Allison is just as good as a NV4500 but easier to drive. Full cage inside. Best part is that I get to keep the a/c!

YES THE T-REX 6X6 WOULD BE THE BEST OFF-ROADER, YET I TOOK IT A STEP FARTHER. OUR 6X6 IS BUILT OUT OF 2.5 TON MILITARY AXLES, EXTERNAL ROLL CAGE, SUPED-UP V10, ETC..ETC.....

GOTO : DODGERAM.COM AND CLICK ON USA6X6 T-REX PROJECT OT SEE PICTURES OF ITS BUILD UP. CURRENTLY IT IS IN THE PAINT BOOTH GETTING NEW SKIN. THE PICTURES IN DODGEREAM.ORG ARE ABOUT 3 MONTHS OLD. IT IS ALMOST DONE AND WILL BE SEEN AT A FEW OFFROAD CHALLENGES HERE IN NEW MEXICO, UTAH AND COLORADO. SEE YA SOON ON THE TRAIL.

The ultimate Dodge 6X6 would be a WC63 1.5 ton with Cummins 4BTA, NV5600, 5.83s with Lockrights, PS/disk brakes and 325/85R16 XMLs.

clinta
01-23-2011, 07:49 PM
much more intimidating in person especially since my Landcruiser has a 106" WB . The dodge at 134" should go up it with out the front getting light. it is also very tricky to get into. what you dont see is at the bottom of the pic the trail crosses perpendicular to this obstacle with the start of it being in a cove in the rock. The other choice is from below as in you drop down into the ravine lower and have a nice climb to get into the cove. the cool part about moon rocks is the rock is like 30 grit sand paper. even when you arent spinning tires you still leave black marks

Changes I would make to my truck to make it the ultimate Dodge trail rig: For everyone it is different what you are looking for in a trail rig and for me it is not as much climbing rock and articulating terrain. I want something that can go out on long distances and be sufficient with all the equipment needed. Being dependable is number one on my list. That is why I chose to jump straight to rockwells instead of going with one tons. My motor use to be dependable but these days Its starting to become my biggest worry. I would rather have a dependable built 440. Not built for massive horsepower but torque. A strong 727 trany mated to the Atlas. I would like to have plenty of fuel capacity and have my 100 gal fuel tank plumbed into the system. I would like a better stronger suspension in the rear possibly better military wrap leaves or a linked suspension. I would rather have wheel brakes instead of pinion brakes. Onboard air to run airtools. A platform on top of my cage to spot animals and set up a shooting platform. 2 12,000lb winches, one front and rear. Custom built spots for gear and spare parts.

01-23-2011, 08:19 PM
Nice, I like all that and like all builds I dont think they are ever done. They are just a constant work in progress. Ever changing just as the obstacles they conquer.I have many plans for mine to make it more self reliant on long trail runs!!

I actually remember when this thread was new. I used to talk to Garrett Matthew (the OP) all the time on AIM back in the day.

Ultimate Dodge?
Not to sound like a broken record, but if one could combine Dusty's and ClintA's rigs it would be killer. I'd start extended cab though. Super low, frame chopped behind cab and in front of engine. Rockwells with Ouverson everything. Stroked 440, built 727, Atlas 4spd. Coilovers. 54" Claws on recentered HEMMT rims. You know... the usual..

01-24-2011, 03:29 AM
I dreamt up something cool the other night. A M925 5 ton military truck chassis with a Cummins ISX engine, 10 speed trans, original 5 ton transfer case, a '80s Dodge CrewCab with a Ramcharger body grafted on to make a "Ram-burban" and 4' bed behind that with a '70's D600 front clip. It would probably be a better expedition and tow rig than a wheeling rig, but it should go just about anywhere it would fit. I tried to Photoshop my idea but I suck at it so it looked pretty fucked up and not quite what I dreamt, lol.

I kinda like the idea of my extended cab ram...

supercharged and stroked V10 on pane
NV4500/
Atlas
5ton rocks (I like to overkill things for peace of mind :D)
54"(ish) rice and canes
Shortened to about 125"
Exo'ed
1 link front and 4 link rear
Front and rear winches
Boatsided

01-24-2011, 10:10 AM
On a budget....

Get an 01 or 02 2500 V10 reg cab, 5 spd manual 4x4....shorten the rear frame, change the bed to a short bed......gut the interior to shed some weight, go to a light flat dash, install 3 comfortable lightweight seats side by side, with the center a little further back.....slap in some rockwells, biggest tires/wheels I could find cheap.....cut in a ghettofabulous sunroof, cut in a set of wheeling doors, cage it, and hit the rocks....lots of sawzall use to keep the height reasonable....

Somehow lose 2k lb (still heavy for a JK) on mine, move the winch back under the rad. Dakota or JK boday, better tires on better wheels.

Did I mention lighter?

I kind of wanted mine lighter also but then again I wanted rocks for beef and links that wouldnt turn into pretzles. So I comprimized

that was kinda my point but funny thing is I have a samuri going under the hot knife. It will be mini mii. and not weigh half of what the dodge weighs. I may even put it on a trailor behind the big truck to go wheelin:D

Nothin wrong with a JK. Especially if his family is growing. I think it would be pretty cool if he did it.

But I'm a little biased, as my next rig will be a 4dr JK :flipoff2:

Nope, no JK. I just helped Fred a little with the one Petersen's built on the Cummins 3500 frame, and it seemed like a cool concept. Convertible, and would give me a whole new truck to destroy! :D For the time being i am keeping the Dodge.

I wonder if the OP would change his mind now, its been a little over 9 years ago.

I like an early Sweptline longbed Power Wagon (till 65 or 66 with the shorter WB)
Cummins 6BT with some mild mods
NV4500
NP271
Dana 60 front 4.10 with LSD (Probably a high pinion Ford with Chevy knuckles)
Dana 70 or 14 bolt or AAM 11.5 4.10 with Detroit
4 wheel disc brakes
Hutchinson bead locks or H1's
37" tires
64" Chevy rear springs with shackle flip (use Chevy 4x4 spring brackets/perches)
52 or 56" front springs with shackle moved to the rear
PS,PB, AC and some modern conviniences.
Bob the rear of bed and frame between 12 to 18"
Boatside cab to floor level (remove inside step)
Same with bed and fenders.
Rear mount fuel tank. Ramcharger large capacity?
Box chassis and add a couple more crossmembers.
Nice simple bumpers with receivers for moving winch front to back.
I am sure I am forgetting something, but you get the idea. I think the wheel base on those early Sweptlines was about 125", kind of right between a shortbed and later longbed.

Would it be wrong to hack up an old Sweptline like this, even if the boatsides would get rid of the rust?:D
