My original radiator mount is breaking on my 71 FJ-40. I'm thinking of putting in a crossflow to gain the tranny cooler. How has anyone installed one? What one fits? Looks like i'm going to have to cut off the back of the headlight buckets to do it. Does anyone have pics of their installation?
My truck has always run at the upper end of the temp scale since putting in the 327. It really ran hot with Hi Compression heads, so the smog heads went back on.

I just put a Griffin aluminum cross flow radiator in a 85 fj60 powered by a tbi 350, it was running hot with the original radiator. The Griffin fit great, only a few inches wider than stock. I tig weld two 3x2 inch tabs to the side tanks, which then bolt to the grill/ sheet metal , worked out really nice, The fj60 now runs cool at all outside temps. Picked up the radiator at summitracing.com around $200.

no inner tranny cooler in the radiator though

When running an aluminum radiator you should always isolate it from chassis ground. IE rubber mounts. Ever notice oem's with aluminum always do it? You can run in to longevity problems when connecting the aluminum radiator to the ferrous steel vehicle framework. They are dissimilar metals and will have electrolosis issues when connected together.:fj:

I was thinking of using a Chevy PU radiator. Need to check the dimensions. I saw some of the new trucks also have an engine oil cooler in them.
I was looking at welding together a lower frame and using the rubber seats like OEM Chev.
I remember seeing posts on this site about cross flow radiators. I saw the website that showed installing the Griffin. It gave me some ideas on how to mount a crossflow. Like I said, I wanted to be able to use the trans cooler also.

doe! didnt think about the eletrolisis problem, I will have to isolate the radiator from being grounded thanks!

Yoda, I used a Summit p/n SUM-380125, it's 25 1/2 wide and 19 high and $149.95, 4 row crossflow, with copper tubes and brass tanks, it' on my '74 with a 383 in it, I made a 360 degree shroud and a 7 blade flex fan off a mid 80's Cad and no fan clutch, works great.:D

not to bang what you did or what works for you but i have to deal with the AZ heat and alum dissipates heat a little better. i do have to keep in mind that trail repairs on the alum are almost nonexistant, copper and brass you just pull out the old propane tourch and some solder and whala! hmmmm, like the price of you rad too......definately fits in my budget. tranny cooler?? also, for those running a standard tranny, why not get a radiator with a tranny cooler and use it for the P/S or oil?

I was looking for a radiator that fit, the installation was a saddle for the bottom, just some angles across the bottom with rubber for cushion and a standoff to the old mounts below at the top I used a flat piece of sheet metal that goes forward to the back of the grill, that keeps the radiator down and from moving from side to side, I have a tranny cooler in front and no electric fan. I'll try to get some pics.

For the Az heat and lack of humidity I've found that flex fans don't work and Al radiators don't work as well. I installed a new 5 core Cu radiator, which is a better conductor of heat but suffers from oxidation and pressure related issues as compared to Al but it to suffers from issue's like interal corrosion. I used a 6 blade 19" rigid fan....that sucks real good....

coyote,
where did you get that fan at. I need to replace the flex fan on my 350 & would like to go cheaper & less problematic than a fan clutch. also, do yuo have a shroud on your radiator?

TIA

I have an aluminum with a non flex fan and run 190 all day long in the desert heat 350 crate motor with TH350 trans. FJ40
