What exactly did you do and how did you do it?

While I have never weighed a 14 bolt, I do not beleive they weigh anywhere near 500 lbs

I think the general concensus is about 375

hubs=48lbs
drums=77lbs
brakes=44
axle housing=187lbs
axles=34lbs
total=390lbs.
I'm putting disks brackes on and will drop about 75lbs.
I cut the bottom lip off in a CNC machine.

YNOTP: do you really think that swaping to disc brakes will save 70 lbs?

don't have the rotors a work but will check tomorrow.
the drums are 77 lbs, rotors i would say 20-25 lbs.
drum brakes are 44 lbs, disk I would say are 20 lbs.
so 77+44=121lbs
25+20=45lbs so the diff would be 76lbs,
I'll check it out and post the diff.

dont forget to account for caliper brackets, calipers, and brake pads.

The drums are 77lbs? maybe both. Your numbers are confusing me :flipoff2:

the 77lbs is both the drums

bgreen,
I just checked the disks and they are 12 lbs each= 24 lbs. both
the old brakes housing are 22-lbs. each= 44 lbs both
so just with the brakes I'll drop 20 lbs.
I'm hoping to lose about 100 lbs when I'm done with all the mods.

your refering to the Rotors as Discs. Correct?

I weighed some stuff today too :P I did this conversion to my 14 bolt a few months ago, but never got around to finding out how much weight it saves. I keep hearing 70 lbs, but never have beleived it.

1/2 ton chevy rotor = 19 lbs.
1/2 ton Chevy Caliper, without the pads = 10 lbs
Caliper bracket from a dana 44 front axle = 4 lbs

Very nice work on the shaving! How did you plot the tool path?

Yeah, I'm calling BS on the 525 too, I've loaded/unloaded them into the back of trucks before, and while i'm pretty huge :rolleyes:, I'm not that huge. :flipoff2:

GM list weight on the entire unit from drum to drum is 586lbs with fluid.

How about the weight of the C&C version?

Clean job on the CNC!! I too, am curious how you plotted the tool path.

I lifted one from the back of a ranger to my k5 with 9"inches of lift with just one other person. Were both big but we aint gonna be able to move 500+.

2 bigs guys should be able to lift over 500lbs together.I weigh 160lbs and can carry these rolls of roofing material that weigh 172lbs each up a ladder on my shoulder.I bet a 14 bolt FF with drums and fluid weighs close to 500lbs if not more.And remember the 1 ton models have bigger brakes yet.Blazin

Well shit, I wonder what the front 60 weighs then cause it felt like it was at least 150lbs more than the 14FF.

kbj,
I plotted the bolts out in the machine, I took a pointed center drill and just move to each bolt and plotted my path. Then in my tooling program I joined the points with a spline, then offset the line so it was out to the edge of the washers of the bolts holding the cover on. Took a test cut to make sure I plotted it right, then cut the lip off.

I've never weighted one but I've always assumed a 14FF and D60 weighed around 500 lbs +/-

I don't think the disk brake conversion really saves 70 lbs, unless you have the big drums, but even then 70 lbs is a lot of weight. My hub and drum seemed like it weighed almost as much as my hub and rotor, but maybe that's just me.:confused:

doing work on mine before I hang it, I'm trying to lighten it up.I have it all apart and weighed all the parts.

axle housing...187 lbs
axle long.....17-1/4 lbs
axle short....15 lbs
hubs..........48 lbs
drums.........77 lbs
brake plates..44 lbs
total.........389bs

My numbers so far..
axle....need to recheck after doing this(187)
axle long.....17 lbs....gun drilling will change this
axle short....14-3/4 ...gun drilling
hubs..........35 lbs
rotors........36-1/2 lbs
calipers......31 lbs...brackets,pads,bolts
total so far..321 lbs

I've muscled a couple of them into the back of my truck and I like to think I'm a stud, but 500 lbs. doesn't sound right. I'm thinking more like high 300 to low 400.

A Dana 60 and 14FF are heavy??? :rolleyes:

You ain't lifted nothing 'till you load a Dana 70 front with closed knuckles and drums into a 3/4-ton with a body lift. I'm a scant 6'4" beanpole and I nearly sh!t myself doing it. Check out my facial expression: :mad:

You guys suck :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :p

Whats the carrier weigh?
Whats the Ring and Pinion weigh?
Whats the pinion cover weigh?
Whats the Diff cover and bolts weigh?
Whats the 16 Studs weigh?
Whats the carrier bearings weigh?
Whats the pinion bearings weigh?
Whats the Axle shaft Flange bolts weigh?
Whats the 16 lug nuts weigh?
Whats the brakelines weigh?
Whats the gear oil weigh?

Am I forgetting anything? :D

Yall are forgetting the weight of the ring and pinion, carrier, and the yoke.

Me and a buddy tried to get a 14 bolt out from underneath a truck in a junk yard and it was all we could do to roll it out. There wasn't any picking it up. I wouldn't say anything under 450 lbs.

I have read in more than one place that the disc conversion does cause the axle to lose around 70lbs.

i weighed the axle housing (carrier) with the diff cover on and the parts still in it, the axles, brakes and hubs were off. 187 lbs
then weighed the hubs, alxes and breake parts. no oil in the diff....
this is the rear brake set-up
