: Tall Stiff Heavy Duty springs

Alright,

Here's where my laziness and incomplete knowledge of springs will surface.

The springs on the crewcab are OME 759's. I incorrectly thought they were the stiffest tallest springs that OME made. Joshua Weinstein pointed out that they are just a taller version of the Medium Duty springs we are all familiar with.

On this last trip I was bottoming out on the front axle quite often and have been mulling about the various options I have now.

1. Air springs

Pros: system is de-bugged, all parts are made, bolt in and drive.

Cons: I would have to actually get some external front shock mounts for both the frame and axle. Options: MJ Lee, NSO, others????

2. Coil springs

Pros: easy, cheap, proven

Cons: will they sag over time? (yes) will they be stiff enough? (maybe) do I know which ones to get? (no)

3. Leave it alone

Pros: it's free

Cons: I'll keep bottoming out and the truck ain't gettin' any lighter.

So, any input is appreciated.

I do really like the Rovertym springs I got from John. Maybe I'll have to give him a call and talk to him about this project.

The 759's are not just longer, they are 260-300 progressive. That is higher than medium duty.

I run them on the front, with an aluminum bumper and no winch, and I get over 4 inches of lift. (my aluminum front ways less than the steel stock it replaced.

I have done some thrashing and they haven't sagged yet.

I think if you call your buds at arb/ome, you will find some springs made for the 145/110 that go to 600 lbs/in. The length will be 18" like the 759, or the custom ones that John sells. That is where I got mine (from John).

I run 300-360 in the rear, 16inch with a 2 inch puck and it handles the weight well.

What about a decent coil spring spacer to make up for the added weight? Unless you need more flex this would probably be the easiest way to account for the heavy arse.

Just measure the rig unloaded then loaded and figure out the difference.

Personally I might look into leafs for the rear of it. I know it seems like a step backwards, but leafs do a better job with weight than coils and you can get some decent flex out of them too.

white130...

Can you give me measurements from top of axle below bumpstop to the frame rail bottom?

The measurements you gave me won't really matter to me because I have no front eyebrows and my rear wheelarches are non-stock.

Maybe I'll just call you tomorrow.

Michael, I sort of thought of that after I posted the numbers, cuz even the tire size sorta make a difference, duh! I will take an axle to chassis measurment for ya in the AM.

Michael, I come up with 9.5 inches at the rear and 7 inchea at the front. That is from axle bumpstop plate to chassis bumpstop plate (no bumpstops installed) The rears are compressed to 15" and the fronts are compressed to 11" (actually pulled down by the shocks)

I am working on pictures, be patient

Went and had the Fat Bastard wieghed today. (new name????)

Axle 1 (front) 3280
Axle 2 (rear) 2760

Total 6040

So, there you go.

I am actually underweight to what I thought I was going to be for the entire vehicle. We had guessed about 7500lbs loaded, and I think it'd be tough to get another 1500lbs in the thing.

Well, actually, maybe not.

4-people x 200lbs = 800

I'm sure I could get various other crap in there to add up to the 700lbs easily. Also, I guess I'm forgetting I have no rear seat yet, which could be up to 50-ish lbs. or so.

The rear isn't where the problem is, so I'll leave the rear alone. It's the front end that is bottoming out, so I have a few ideas.

KC and I talked last night and he has some ideas kickin' around.

How much does an F350 crewcab weigh? Dodge? Chevy?

I think I remember a 99 f350/250 stroker being 6450 curb.
