I need a tire that is better than my current sx's on the road. I know that they have the heaviest sidewalls etc so I was wondering if anyone had switched from sx's to another bias tire or from a bias tire to sx's and found better onroad results. I need to stay about the same width as I have which is 15.50. But I am going from 33's to 38's. My sx's are perfectly round and I don't care about the noise too much but I need something that will grab the ruts less than the sx's. They are horrible on the freeway with a trailer. Which I realize they aren't meant for. Anyway I am now looking at going with a 38-15.50 tsl Radial because I know these will be better on the road. However if anyone has a recomendation for a smooth riding tire that will track straight that is bias I would like to hear it because I don't want to lose all of my sidewall strength by going to radials. But I have to be able to stay in my lane on the road. The truck is 65 Chevy with newer 3/4 ton axles. It sees a lot of street time with a 18 foot trailer but is also used heavily on weekends for wheeling in snow some sand and rocks. Thanks for the help guys!

so you want to ditch your bias ply tires and get bias ply's and you want something that won't grip ruts as well:rolleyes:
Am I missing something?? Umm good luck on this one. I'm starting to think I should ditch my MTR's and get some radials...just couldn't help myself:flipoff2:

Try a narrower tire for better road manners

Michelin XML's. Military's, radial, 38.5", ride nice on the road, will never wear out.
Do a search, a buddy bought some in Montreal and had them shipped. $1300 Can for 5 to his door (that's about $800US).
Cheers

bias ply and on road performance should never be in the same sentence.
that is your problem.
my new mickeys are not that bad as far as vibes. but they do wander a bit. and make lots of noise :)

Yeah I kinda figured that there wouldn't be anything much better but it doesn't hurt to ask. Wider isn't really a good option since the truck is setup for a fairly fat tire and I would have to replace the front clip and rebuild the bed to get it narrower. Oh well Tsl Radials it is.
and CA_YJ Are you implying that all bias plys are identical? Just curious..

OR
Buy a set of radials for road duty and just swap them around.
There is no such thing as a road friendly bias ply.

Nope, not all identical, but they are never gonna run like radials on the street.

Width is the biggest problem you are combating. It changes your scrub radius, which makes the truck "grab" the ruts.

My memory may fail me.....but was it Armstrong Tru-Tracs
that were all the bias ply rage maybe 10 years ago?

I've only driven one set of bias, 34x9.5 TSLSs, and they don't grab ruts at all.
Seems to me a narrower tire's your best bet. Even a 38x14.5 is probably a little better than your 33x15.5
