i have a long shafted t-18b with a dana 20 from a 78 wagoneer. i want to put a short shaft in it behind my 304 in my cj-7. what would be my best route to change the input shaft to a short one? who has one? I called advanced and they have the shaft for a ford swap, is that what im looking for? the guy wasnt sure it would work for my application. should i get a 2wd ford t-18 or t-98 for donnars? please help my jeep has been down for too long. i had a garage sale this past weekend and now have some $ to spend, but have to spend it before the wife does.... thanks, and yes i have searched lots but still need more help.. oh ya do you think its worth shortining the shaft anyhow. if you have done this swap without shortining the shaft what were the draw backs, besides drive shaft angles? thanks again <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0">

Yep, find a Ford T18 and swap in its input shaft. They are plentiful in the junkyards and are relatively cheap. One form either 2wd or 4wd will fix your problem. Then all you need is a custom pilot bushing from Advance or Novak along with a T150 bellhousing.

Would a t-176 bellhousing work?

the junkyard would be cheaper but http://www.hicks4x4.com/ makes a kit. friend of mine is doing a t-15 to 1-18 swap right now

Yeah, the T176 bellhousing will work. It has the same bolt pattern and input shaft depth as the T150 BH.

i have the long shaft t18/d20 combo in my cj7.. no problems with it.. my rear driveshaft is 21" long.. going to a cv shaft.. but have a normal two joint shaft in it now.. works fine.. drove it 12 continueous hours... my shifter was torched off.. so i just welded on a straight piece of rod.. works awesome.. mine was out of a j series truck... the shifter sits in the middle of the floor pan..

go to the junkyard it's the cheapest way and pretty easy. If you can get a hold of a 304, 360, 401 bellhousing they'll work. Good luck

thanks.. only problem i have.. is i made the boots alittle tight.. so they ripped after a month.. need to make some new ones..
problems with center console?? i have the cup holding thing.. and i have enough room to put it in the front.. i just like it behind the console.. the shifter is about in the stock location.. i had the oringinal pan on there.. i just had to cut down the side for my transfer case shifter.. has a U shift pattern... so i made my pan.. to cover the hole..
for the cross member.. i used my stock cj one.. i just had to cut a hole out for the lower portion of the t18.. where the drain plug is.. it worked fine.. but i made a custom one.. stronger.. i dont have any pics of it.. will be redoing it.. making it bigger.. so it covers the front of the tranny.. what i had to do is take some straight 2.5" stock.. and cut a 10" piece or so.. bolted it to the mounting holes.. and i used the stock rubber mount from the cj.. and just drilled two holes in the pan.. it worked great.. but i just wanted something thicker under it.. i still have the pan.. if you like.. i could take a pic of it.. to show what i had to cut.. it wasnt much..

when you get a chance i would love to see a pic, im in no major hurry... my jeep has been down for 3 years already, a few more months will just make it more fun trying not to break everthing again. you said you had 21" of drive line, are you running a dana 44 in the rear? do you know off hand how much longer my 9" is than your 44. when you did you swap was it before you did your spring over? thanks again. steve

well.. i sorta built the jeep from scratch.. so the soa was in there before.. i am running a d60 rear.. not sure on the difference in length on that and a 9".. sure.. ill try to get a pic this weekend.. and post it... ill get the pan.. and whatever else..
there are some pics on my webpage.. which i finally got back up.. under "new jeep"... "drivetrain".. i show how i mounted the cj skid plate with the yj frame.. i used some pieces of angle iron.. since the yj frame is wider..
