Drive line vibes have done something bad.In 2H my 205 screams a horrible bearing noise and goes away when I accellerate, but returns immediately when cruising.I took the case apart and the idler bearings feel rough but doesn't have any galling. How much bearing slop is allowable before a noise occurs?

Mine does the same thing. I don't know what it is, but it has been doing it for more that 7 years. I don't know about the bearing slop, but I would rebuild the case. Especially if you already have it apart.

make sure the nut holding the yoke on is tight.. if that's ok and the bearings look fine then run it.. are you sure the noise is coming from the 205?

I have to ask a dumb question here just to make sure that you checked the obvious. If you put your hand on the shirter does it change the noise at all? The bushings in the shifter wear out and you end up with a horrific noise that might be easily mistaken for bearing noise. Mine did this, it was so loud that it drowned out the swampers and the exhaust, I rebuilt the shift linkage with bronze bushings and it went away completely.

The shifter bushings need replacing too,but when it starts to howl ,it doesn't stop when I grab and hold the shifter.I am installing new idler shaft bearings & cups and shimming the idler shaft properly to take out the slop. There was a bit of up and down movement in the idler shaft so that would probably make some bad noise. It looks as though the case has been rebuilt not to long ago as the gaskets weren't stuck and all the rest of the bearings feel OK. As soon as I get it back in ,the rig is getting a customized rear flat flange and a 1350 CV drive shaft.
