Please don't fawk up this thread by suggesting alternatives such as weld in inserts etc....... If you have a good source to add, please do so.

Search NAZI's, please DON'T do a SEARCH and list that shit. This is CURRENT info as of 1/10/03

So I spent much of my day yesterday e-mailing tool stores looking for the best deal on a 7/8-18 Left Hand tap. Which turned into looking for any store that could actually get it.

Most replied that it's not a standard tap blah blah and they don't carry it. Then some couldn't grasp the LEFT hand thread concept. Anyway, this is what I have so far.

http://www.dreamertoolinc.com
This one looks pretty good, IF A 4x4 VENDER WERE TO BUY UP A BUNCH AND SELL THEM TO US CHEAP! Amazing how much the price drops :eek: $50 sounds pretty fair to me.

THE PRICE FOR A 7/8-18 LEFT HAND TAP IS.

1= 111.18
3= 68.45
6= 55.74
12=39.66

DEL 3 TO 5 DAYS

http://www.jlindustrial.com
Had to contact their vender to get a quote for me.......who the heck is their vender??? part number looks generic for the price quote and they probably won't have a clue if you called them with it.

Good morning Matt,
This would be special order item TLH-99999-L cost $100.30 each. In stock at the vendor delivery 1-2 days. Same pricing for 3 or 4 flutes.

www.e-taps.com
Not very clear on their shipping terms/times, and it looks like they toss in a few fees.

Prices:
7/8"-18 UNS L.H. taps:
1 pc $59.25
2-3 pc $47.60/pc
4-6 pc $42.90/pc

I'm still waiting on some replies, so I may have more too add later.

- -edit - - Got another reply

Yes we do have the tap you are looking for. They are $103.73 with a 1 week dekivery. Thanks again!

I really like the idea of a 4x4 vender buying up a bunch for us. You know they would sell very quickly to the 4x4 crowd.

you're not thinking like a husband

line up 11 or more buyers for $50/ea so you can buy them for $40/ea. then you get a free (free is always wife approved, depending on stench of part) tap for yourself, and you can take the profit, go to tiffanys.com, order her a $80 set of earrings, and tell her where the money for them came from to get them when you give them to her out of the blue. she'll be finding you piles of front dana 60's by the wee'ks end :D

I highly recommend e-taps.com I ordered the 7/8 -18 R&L taps in december and they arived about 2 weeks ago. Looks like good quality stuff, I havent used them yet. E-taps has good communication, they were prompt with email quotes and let me know when it shipped out. They dont take credit cards so I sent them a check. My price to my door was about $102 for the R&L 7/8 18 taps

E-taps did respond quickly to my e-mail. In fact they were the first company I e-mailed, then I thought, fawk it I'll e-mail every company I find until my boss notices I'm not getting any work done :D

Sounds like e-taps is a legit source then. However, you did get overcharged for the right hand tap. The right hand tap is a very popular tap and can be purchased most places for $20.

I scored 3 off of ebay for a total of $15. Supposively they were used, but I couldn't see any sign of use.

To minimize tapping problems and lengthen tool life, use the largest drill possible to produce a minor diameter that will result in the lowest percentage of full thread consistent with adequate strength. A minor diameter that provides a 55% to 65% thread is sufficient for most requirements, but in some cases a higher percentage of thread may be necessary to conform with the minor diameter limits of the thread class specified.
Drills generally cut holes larger than their diameters. In the form bellow, the probable percentages of full thread were determined by the average amount oversize the various drills are expected to cut. Reaming becomes necessary when close control of the hole size is required.

Uhhhh.......in english please......

Well with our new taps on the way, I was kinda curious what the optimum size hole for tapping would be if I were to drill and tap something solid, and to be sure which ID tube I would need.

I had read 1.250 OD x 0.812 was the stuff to have. Which is ~13/16. According to this website and nifty little calculator, that is correct. Although, even ID 0.831 would be sufficient.

According to that website that is a good idea to prolong tool life.

To minimize tapping problems and lengthen tool life

Do you use a straight reamer to bore it out or a lathe?

Next time, you might try Cutting Tools, Inc. 2212 Wayne Trace, Fort Wayne, IN 46803 260-424-5300. I bought left and right hand taps for 11-16/16 for about $50 for both. From what I have learned here, this is the standard thread for not only my Land Rover, but also the standard for Fords.

I went around and around with most of the common tooling supply shops, even some of the specialty shops and this was not only the best price, but they are local to me and the delivery was next day.

While I can understand the price being higher for the larger tap, I don't understand the significant gap in price for what are both decidedly non-standard tools.

Peace,
Paul

No tap for me yet :( Fed Ex can never find my house though.....even though it's a half mile from their office:rolleyes:

Anyway, I did help a friend tap some .812 with a borrowed tap on sunday. Let me tell you, it was a bitch. It definately needs to be reamed out a hair. Even after the holes were tapped, the TRE's were extremely difficult to screw in because there was too much thread enguagement.

The drag link I'm running now was made from a cheby tierod. I just cut the right hand threads off and re-tapped. (already had RH tap) That stuff has a slightly larger ID, and was really easy to tap, and the TRE's screwed in nice and smooth.

So anyway, you've been warned! Wouldn't want you to ruin your new taps!

Are there any plans to do this again in the future?

I missed the boat the first go round. I have been paying a local shop $40.00 a tube to drill and tap my stuff. I could have bought 4 of these taps by now with how many I have had to do.

I've got a technique that has worked pretty well for me. Let's say your going to drill and tap some 1.25" x .250 wall tube with your new 7/8-18 tap. Go get a block of steel that is 1.5"x1.5"x3" long. (you will want to do this on a lathe to keep the centers in line) Bore a hole in one end that is 1.25" in diameter by about 1.5" deep. In the other end, bore a hole that is 53/64" (drill diameter for 7/8-18 tap) in diameter and through to the other 1.5" bore. Now what you have is a piece that you can fit over the tube end and will align your hand drill to drill straight into the tube on it's axis. Take the alignment piece off and you should be able to hand tap it now straight in without any alignment pieces. The tap will follow the bore. Just don't get crazy with side loading while threading it in.

Works great for me.

I do something similar, only directly in the tube. I typically use 1 1/8" by .250 wall tube to make steering links with 3/4" shank, 5/8" bolt heims. I will take the tube (5/8" bore) and drill it out to 11/16" bore (tap diameter for 3/4" fine thread) about 4" deep. I will then come back and drill it out to 3/4" diameter about 1" deep.

I use the 3/4" bore area as a tap guide, and tap thru the 11/16 bore segment. Once it is tapped, just cut the extra inch off with the chop saw and chamfer the threads with the 3/4" drill bit. It is not 100% perfect, but it works well enough.

Where can I get the left and right hand 7/8-18 jam nuts?

I stried calling Parts Mike, but he never called back. 2 calls and 1 PM. Also, the Chevy part number listed in this site was discontinued in 1982... (called 2 different dealerships)
