I have rebuilt 3rds with 4.88s that I will be installing shortly. One of the 3rds does not have thrust washers or a center pin. I checked on the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog (downloaded from Yankee Toys web page) and it shows different part numbers for the front vs. the rear diff, is that right? Aren't these parts the same? Is it a good idea to replace the thrust washers that I do have for the other diff with new ones? Also, it looks like I'm going to have to grind one of the teeth a bit to fit the pin with the 4.88s, that's normal isn't it?

The front is a full floater and does not need the center pin to hold the C Clips in. You don't need one. You are all set! Giddy up!!

Nolen,
Doesn't the center pin also connect the spider gears to the carrier?????
I am sure that I have a center pin in the front axle of my cruiser. And they should be the same as in the rear. Just no PITA c clips!!!

the front will not have a turst block just a center pin the rear needs the thrust block to hold in the c clips. as far as grinding the ring gear a little don't worry about it just use a drum sander in a dotco type grinder and go easy. i would use a straight piece of 1/2 layed in the hole for the pin to gauge when you are down far enough. i used the pin on my 5.29s and i ground alittle more than i needed to. mike

The center pin holds the side gears in. The side gears and axles hold the spider gears

OK, for anyone still reading this thread... I think the third members I have are the pre-84 ones that use a seal and shims for the pinion. I am pulling the 3.70 diffs out of my FJ60 to put the 4.88s in. I need to use my '86 FJ60 flanges with these diffs. The diffs were just rebuilt and have not been ran. Can I just take it all apart and put it back together with the FJ60 flanges? Do I have to adjust pre-load again? Can you tell I've never done this before?

Ken,

I have the driveshaft ends that would swap out the ends of your driveshafts to match the pinion flange. It would just mean pressing in and out a U joint. They are yours if you need them.

Later!
