: Arizona Emission Help
coyote 11-05-2001, 03:26 PM Guys, Need some help,, I guess something changed here in Az since I lived here before, I took my 75 Fj 40 to the emissions place and they insisted that I open the hood, previousily they didn't do this but now said it was the only way I could pass, I realize they don't know what their looking for since they couldn't even open the hood and finding components was the second problem. I failed for PCV, easy fix, air system...not sure what they want but not going to put an air pump on, and then failed the actual test, HC Loaded 87/250 CO 1.2/1.5 and HC idle 478/250 and CO .92/2 and believe I just need to richen the mix up and install a PCV breather to pass a simple view.....any help or recommendations would be great....if all else fails she will become a trailer queen, that being a step up from her past as a concrete paper weight....please help, sorry so long....
RHINO 11-05-2001, 04:11 PM yup unfortunately, since they need to open the hood now, you will have to put the air system back, (pump and fittings). you also need charcoal can, and all the vacuum hoses.
air syst. isnt bad, i hate EGR, but guess what? they dont check for EGR so you dont need it!
modify a GM air pump to fit cruiser bracket, it isnt hard to do.
then just hook up enough hoses to work those items.
emmissions suck, i wish AZ did the 25 yr thing instead of 1967.
coyote 11-05-2001, 04:43 PM In 96 I had no hood open and I have a 350 so brkts aren't an issue but I don't want to put different exhaust manifolds, air pump and all that stuff on my Cruiser, my engine compartment is cramped already and its not a daily driver...need to read up on the law, mine is a 12/74 so its right on the edge!
RHINO 11-05-2001, 05:07 PM it might be worth it to check, mine is 2-75 and requires all the stuff less CAT.
when they switched to OBD? thats when the changes happened.
also my bro-in-law works theres, training guy or something, if you have trouble getting info i'll have him check it out.
coyote 11-05-2001, 05:48 PM Just need to make it look good, the purpose of an air pump is to keep the cat purged and pump air into the exhaust....might just get an air pump to put on it to make it look good but it won't function, I know it doesn't steal performance from the vehicle other then engine drag, ask your bro-in-law what exactly they want to see, ie air pump, some vacuum lines and lines routed...the tech support stuff that they gave me was pretty simple air pump and a pcv line and it should pass....
Clifton 11-05-2001, 07:13 PM You must of been gone for a long time, It's 74' and newer they check under the hood. Atleast for the last 15 years. When I failed my Nox was high, I was to lean. I also know timing at idle DOES effect your readings too much and I have failed in the past. If you're looking to graft another make of air pump on I think I still have some Z car pumps I'd let go for nothing. email me if you want one.
coyote 11-05-2001, 08:26 PM Actually its 75 and newer they open the hood, been on ADEQ web site....I was here in 96 at the same facility and they wanted to do this today. What I need to know is what their looking for as Rhino mentioned they don't care about the EGR valve or CAT....and the air pump doesn't do any good unless you have a cat other then pumping up your exhaust pressure and some minor volume-metric air displacement....mostly the pump purges the moisture buildup in the cat and keeps it dry and efficient, according to the books I've read on emissions....I guess I need to get a pump and some brackets if I want to get it registered and plate's....might take you up on the pump but I need to get a bracket and pump that mounts high driver side if they exist or low left and leave it, do you just have the pump or brkts to.......need to hit the yard and see what they got!....planning on using it for just visual sake and no function!
Clifton 11-06-2001, 05:12 AM Alot of early 70's cars used air pumps with no cats. They have nozzles in the ex. manifold, one for each port. I don't know exactly how blowing air into the exhaust port helps I just know how they are set up. If yours never came with a cat and the exhaust manifold doesn't have air I don't see why they say you need a pump, as there would be no were to attach it to. If this is the case maybe you got someone who thinks you should have it, but in reality it never came with it. You might want to check on the Lancruiser board. You might find someone with the same set up as yours to verify.
crawler#976 11-06-2001, 05:45 AM best option is to move outa the Valley!!
no smog, no smog testing!!
Later
RHINO 11-06-2001, 04:14 PM ok here goes, according to him
original equipment for cruiser, dont care about chevy.
PCV
air sys
charcoal can
all associated vacuum lines, but they dont look at what the lines go to as long as they are hooked to something, and they know bolts, so make it look good
vacuum advance
unleaded fuel inlet on filler neck
and sealed gas cap, pressure test.
thats it, it would be in your best interest to make sure the vacuum lines are hooke to vacuum ports because they get trained to look for dummy ports.
coyote 11-06-2001, 08:47 PM Rhino, I spoke with a person from ADEQ and he was very honest. He told me what I needed to do and gave me the statue and everything...FYI http://www.azleg.state.az.us then AZ Statues look for 49.542G so its off to the junk yard to get a smog pump and some check valves and lines to make it look good. He said as long as it has a pump and lines it will pass the air sys test and should fly through emmissions just fine. The cool think is that he's a Cruiser fanatic and new his shit! Wow a state worker that took time to tell me what to do.....
