What kind of milage did you get when it was new ? When did it get better ? This thing drinks like Roggy.

It looks like it has a 'Stroke emblem on the side. Is it a diesel?

I have a gas burner in mine. It gets 18 mpg at 55 mph and 13 at 75. The damn truck is shaped like a Big F'n Brick (without a jeep on back) so it makes sense.

How bad is the mileage and under what conditions.

Need more specs. Assuming Diesel, but what tranny, gear ratio, type of driving/speed, etc. On mine (F550/PSD/6SPD/4.88) usually cruise at 60 MPH and about 16,500# I get around 16 MPG. This is a ? more suited to the tow rig forum.

That was stupid of me... It's a 7.3 with 4.10's and an auto. What I was really after is what kind of milage did you get when the motor was brand new vs having a few miles on it. And at what point did the milage get better. Say 500 - 1000 - 5000 ???

Sorry to post this here but I really need answers for a report I need to finish and the tow page doesn't get much play.

(sorry for all the speeleng missteaks im dum)

edit:this is driving with the flow and when no flow to the floor f450-550=87mph f650=80

I was told by a couple of owners of late 90's (97/99) PSD F350s that they get as good as low 20's in mileage. I hear from people
who have newer ones (2002's) that the best mileage is slighly higher than the middle teens. What happened? Did Ford change something in the PSD design that reduced mileage?

My 02 7.3 gets 15-16 average, 13-14 towing 6k#. Mileage has not changed since new and it now has 25k miles. Truck is a 4x4, auto, 3.73, 315's, and 2" lift.

Ok Tony, you know what I have. Towing my boat, about 4k lbs, say to Oroville.......13-14mpg.
Just cruising around town, mixed driving......bout the same.
Open freeway, unloaded........17-18mpg. Never seen it better than 18, and it has always been about the same. Friend of mine bought a F350/drw/cc/4x4, could not get over 14, anywhere. He chipped it, and now it drives about 18 open road.

2002 CC, PSD, 6sd, 4x4, 3.73's, longbed (whew!) on summer fuel, about 19.5 hiway, 17 city. That's with about 2000k to 5000k miles now with 7000k and winter fuel it's down to about 17.5 to 18 combined. I haven't done any highway cruising on a tank of winter fuel.

Speed is a big factor, it oulw seem. My buddies 450 with PSD/Auto/4.88 gets ~5MPG better at 55-60ish than 65ish. I don't know why the gap is that big, but there it is.

By the way, what gears? Those 4.88s are nice around town when loaded down with landscaping gear, but they SUCK on the highway with two trail rigs behind it. 450s rule. It rides & drives the same unloaded as it does with a 3500 lb jeep on the bed, and a ~4000lb toyota on a dual axle trailer behind it. 10,000lbs? Can't even feel it. :cool2:

Mine didn't seem to "loosen up" until it had about 15,000 kilometres on it. Got about 13 MPG before that, then about 14 MPG when everything was broken in. Some BOMBING and 285/70/19.5 instead of the 225/70/19.5 put me up at 16 MPG(U.S.)

Only had the Jeep on the bed and the big trailer and 2nd rig loaded once around town. If it wasn't for the mirrors, you would forget anthing was back there.

Thanks, everyone for all the info.

I have an '00 F-250, diesel, 4x4, crew cab, shortbed, 6 speed, 3.73 and 265 series tires(245 series are available that will lower your gearing a little). I didn't even check the mileage before 5000 miles. At 5000 miles I put an 80 horsepower chip in it, K & N filter, ram-air, and Flowmaster exhaust. I get 20 mpg unloaded highway and 16 - 17 mpg pulling #6000. The mileage seems to drop considerably if I am in a hurry and run 80 or better. (unloaded, of course ;) )

I have a 02' F350 4x4 diesel with a flatbed, dual 12,000 lb warns, 4.10's, 6 speed. I carry a full load of concrete blocks all the time. The truck with blocks and 120 gallons of fuel weighs 11,600lbs. At around 10,000 miles it was getting around 7-8 mpg loaded. that includes a 7,000 lb trailer with a 12'x24' storage building on it running 65 mph at 3000 rpms. I put a chip in it and cut the converter off it (I love Tennessee, no smog!) at about 15,000 miles and it was getting around 10 mpg loaded. I now have 35,000 miles on it and the mileage is around 12 mpg loaded. I don't know what it would get unloaded beacause it has never been driven over 10 miles unloaded. Oh ya it has been a great truck except when the rear drivers side wheel studs sheared off.

Out of curiosity, why do you keep it loaded down with all that extra weight?

i have a 99 f250, PSD, 6spd, 3.73, 2wd, 8' bed, Xcab. I get about 18 unloaded, and 15 pulling the cruiser, both numbers are highway use. Unloaded i usually run at the governor, 95mph, towing i usually run about 70 mph. I'm sure that if i were to go 65 mph unloaded i'd get at least 20 mpg. BTW - this is with 97k miles on the motor...

The '00 and up didn't have catalytic converters on them...maybe you cut off the muffler?

Tony,

First thing I would do if I were you is get in touch with "Hutch" on the old ford-diesel site (don't remember what the new name is). There are a TON of known and documented problems with the PSD as related to power, mileage, cylinder pressure, fuel delivery, etc, etc. Most of the information came out of people like yourself having mileage problems.

My (former) 00 PSD got about 15mpg before some of the mods designed by Hutch. Was up to about 17mpg after, but then dumped the truck when the brakes started giving me headaches.

2001 F350 crew cab, SRW, short box.

a) I have not kept miticulous records, this is seat of the pants.

b) I am not a mechanic, or diesel guru, so this is seat of the pants.

I noticed no discernible difference between new and now. I currently have about 20K miles on it.

I have gotten high teens in mileage, I have also gotten low teens in mileage. Because I'm canadian, everything is km here, so I'm guessing at the conversions. The main point I want to make is that I find a dramatic difference with SPEED. Specifically, if I stay 'out of the turbo', mileage improves dramatically. For me, regardless of pedal position you can hear the tutbo whine start to kick in around 105 kph, which is about 65 mph. So bottom line is if I want to baby it I stay 100 kph or below, as soon as I kick it up a bit mileage drops. I would say the difference is 15 ~ 20% in mileage.

However, even if I am constantly crusing on the turbo, this thing STILL gets way better mileage than my I6 jeeps.

Towing of course affects mileage, I would say -15~20%. So if you are towing a loaded trailer and got yer foot in it, you can expect a 30~40% decrease in mileage, overall.

Just my 2c, HTH.
