ok here's the deal. a friend of mine just bought a 1985 K-5 blazer for the engine and axles, the body is shiot but the frame is immaculate and he is giving it to me for free. I want to go Jeep and go convertable so I started asking around. There is a man right outside of town who has a ton of M-715 parts and a ton of military 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton axles.

here we go. I am going to use an m-715 body on the blazer frame. I am going to run Chevy drivetrain.

the man has:
double reduction 2 1/2 ton axles with a really high driveline (6.79 final ratio) that he claims aer called timkin style.
single reduction 2 1/2 ton axles with a regular pinnon (6.17 gears) that he called eatons.
factory m-715 axles (5.89 gears) closed knuckle and disc brakes.

he is basically giving these away so for now these are my options. this will be my daily driver and running anywhere from 38 to 44 inch tires.

what do ya'all think?

go with the M-715 axles. they are a front Dana 60 and a rear Dana 70 and you WILL NOT break them, unless you are running in excess of around 600 ft lbs of torque that is, then go for something like a 2.5 ton rockwell. but in order to do that you will have to figure out a way to use the ENORMOUS track width that these puppies had. in any case, good luck to you man!

yeah, I have all the info on the 715.........the closed knuckle and drum brakes are a definate turn off as well as two piece axles.

the only disc kit i've found so far is $800. ouch.

Eaton's aren't 2.5 ton - they are 1 ton (as far as I know). They are a hair stronger than 14 bolts. If caddyman is right - I'd go with the D60 front and D70 rear combo. HTH.
